Job Description

Director, Portfolio Management

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Director, Portfolio Management based in United States.

The Director, Portfolio Management will play a central role in strengthening portfolio planning, governance, performance management, and cross-organizational execution. Reporting to the COO, this role will bring structure to a complex, multi-entity environment and turn strategic priorities into clear plans, operating rhythms, and measurable outcomes. You will connect organizational strategy, operating plans, capital requirements, and portfolio-level priorities while providing leaders with actionable insights. The position combines strategic thinking with hands-on operational leadership, requiring strong judgment and the ability to influence without direct authority. You will work closely with senior leaders across organizations to improve decision-making, accountability, and resource allocation. This is an opportunity to shape how a mission-driven portfolio grows, evolves, and creates long-term impact.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead the portfolio planning process by integrating organizational strategies, operating plans, capital requirements, double-bottom-line goals, and portfolio-level priorities to support effective resource allocation.
  • Build and maintain portfolio management infrastructure, including dashboards, scorecards, reporting systems, comparative analyses, and benchmarks that provide visibility into performance, risks, priorities, and dependencies.
  • Partner with Finance and operating leaders to connect strategic objectives with operating plans and resource allocation, while synthesizing complex information into clear recommendations and decision points for senior leadership.
  • Maintain and continuously improve operating frameworks, decision rights, authority matrices, and playbooks that clarify how different organizations collaborate and make decisions.
  • Coordinate portfolio governance activities and prepare materials for leadership and Board discussions, while identifying opportunities to simplify processes, strengthen decision-making, and reduce unnecessary coordination.
  • Lead or coordinate high-priority initiatives spanning multiple organizations, translating portfolio priorities into defined workstreams, owners, milestones, dependencies, and delivery cadences.
  • Surface execution risks and gaps early, facilitate resolution with senior stakeholders, and establish lightweight processes that create accountability without unnecessary bureaucracy.
  • Serve as a strategic and operational partner to the COO and leadership team by designing and facilitating portfolio-level forums, working sessions, and decision-making processes.
  • Build trusted relationships across the portfolio and influence effectively in an environment characterized by distributed decision-making, complex stakeholders, and shared accountability.
Requirements:
  • Bring 10+ years of experience within a multi-entity holding company, investment management organization, private equity, venture capital, development finance, or a comparable portfolio environment.
  • Have direct experience in a portfolio-level position, complemented by a background in strategy, business operations, portfolio operations, strategic program management, or a related discipline.
  • Demonstrate strong analytical and problem-solving capabilities, with the ability to synthesize complex qualitative and quantitative information into clear recommendations, priorities, and actions.
  • Have strong expertise in metrics management, dashboards, performance tracking, information systems, and systems thinking, with the ability to connect individual organizational performance to broader portfolio outcomes.
  • Bring experience leading significant cross-functional initiatives involving senior stakeholders and navigating environments where influence and collaboration are more important than formal authority.
  • Have excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare concise, compelling materials for executive and Board-level audiences.
  • Demonstrate strong judgment, discretion, and maturity when handling sensitive organizational, financial, and leadership matters.
  • Familiarity with Board governance and capital allocation processes is strongly preferred.
  • Bring a genuine connection to mission-driven work and an interest in building an organizational model that balances social impact with strong operational and business discipline.
Benefits:
  • Target annual base salary of $240,000–$280,000 USD.
  • Eligibility for an annual bonus in addition to the base salary.
  • Opportunity to operate at a portfolio level across multiple organizations, with significant visibility into strategy, governance, capital allocation, and organizational performance.
  • Direct partnership with senior leadership and the opportunity to influence high-priority, cross-organizational decisions.
  • Opportunity to shape operating models, governance frameworks, and systems that support long-term portfolio growth and mission impact.
  • Exposure to complex strategic initiatives involving organizational development, resource allocation, performance management, and cross-functional execution.
