Job Title: Funeral Assistant

Job Summary

The Funeral Assistant plays a vital role in ensuring that funeral services, visitations, and memorial events run smoothly, seamlessly, and with the utmost dignity. Working directly under the supervision of the Funeral Director, the assistant provides compassionate customer service to grieving families, manages logistical and administrative details, and maintains the pristine appearance of the facilities and vehicles. This role requires a unique blend of deep empathy, professionalism, and strong organizational skills.

Key Responsibilities

Service & Guest Support

  • Welcome & Direct: Greet grieving family members and guests arriving for visitations, viewings, and services, providing a warm, supportive, and professional first impression.
  • Ushering: Direct attendees to seating, chapels, or gravesites, and assist individuals with mobility restrictions.
  • Service Assistance: Assist the Funeral Director with the logistics of the service, which may include arranging floral displays, distributing register books/programs, closing caskets at the appropriate times, and operating audio/visual equipment.
  • Procession Assistance: Act as a pallbearer when requested and assist in organizing the funeral procession line of vehicles.

Operations & Facility Maintenance

  • Setup and Breakdown: Prepare chapels, viewing rooms, and reception areas before services (adjusting lighting, seating, and floral arrangements) and clean/reset them afterward.
  • Vehicle Care: Ensure the funeral fleet (hearses, limousines, and lead vehicles) is clean, vacuumed, fueled, and polished prior to every service.
  • General Housekeeping: Maintain the cleanliness and presentation of both public areas (lobby, restrooms) and administrative spaces.

Administrative & Technical Support

  • Documentation: Assist with basic office duties, including answering phones, filing paperwork, and processing death certificates or obituaries.
  • Transportation: Assist with the respectful transfer and transport of the deceased from the place of death (hospital, home, or nursing facility) to the funeral home, and eventually to the cemetery or crematory.
  • Preparation Support: When needed and permitted by law, assist with dressing, casketing, or preparing the deceased for viewing (note: this does not include embalming, which requires a specialized license).

Qualifications & Skills

  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent (GED) required.
  • Experience: Prior experience in customer service, hospitality, or a caregiving role is highly preferred. Experience in the funeral service industry is a plus, but not always required.
  • Key Attributes: * Compassion & Empathy: Ability to interact tactfully and kindly with people enduring profound grief and emotional distress.
  • Discretion & Professionalism: Maintaining strict confidentiality and adhering to dress codes (typically conservative, formal business attire).
  • Attention to Detail: Precision in following specific cultural, religious, and family instructions for services.
  • Physical Requirements: Ability to stand for long periods, lift and carry heavy objects (such as caskets or large floral arrangements, often up to 50 lbs or more), and work in varying weather conditions during graveside services.
  • License: A valid driver’s license with a clean driving record is required for operating company vehicles.

Work Environment & Schedule

  • Hours: Often irregular and unpredictable. This position frequently requires working evenings, weekends, and holidays, as well as participating in an on-call rotation for after-hours transfers.
  • Environment: Split between indoor office/chapel settings and outdoor cemetery environments.
