FLSA Status: Nonexempt


Job Summary: Under the general supervision of the Wastewater Foreman/Chief Operator, the Wastewater Operator I is responsible for work in the operation of state regulated facilities that have a direct effect on the health and well-being of the public. Wastewater Operator I works and performs a variety of basic level tasks with close supervision and within established guidelines and procedures including routine maintenance and operation of facility equipment.

Education/Training/Experience Requirements:

1. High school diploma or equivalent.

2. Class “C” Wastewater Certificate within 30 months of hire or promotion date. Training provided.

3. Class “C” Texas Driver’s License. Obtain Class “B” CDL within 60 days of hire or promotion date.

Essential Job Functions:

1. Operates and maintains treatment processes.

2. Operates heavy equipment including the belt press.

3. Hauls sledge.

4. Safely operates and assesses all equipment and machinery in work area.

5. Learns to detect flaws in operations and equipment.

6. Carries on-call phone.

  1. Learns TCEQ and EPA Rules and Regulations applicable to that facility and their specific job functions.
  2. Performs other related duties as required.

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

1. Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.

2. Ability to learn to perform routine test and measurements.

3. Ability to operate lab equipment and run samples.

4. Ability to learn basic computer and record keeping skills.

Physical Demands/Work Environment: Lifting and carrying up to 100 pounds; pulling, pushing or dragging up to 150 pounds of repair equipment and materials; climbing, crawling, kneeling, squatting, stooping and bending freely when participating in repairs; sitting, standing or walking for extended periods of time; working indoors and outdoors in extreme temperatures including heat, cold, temperature swings and inclement weather; and some exposure to mechanical, electrical and explosive hazards dust, using proper safety precautions. May work in tight and enclosed areas. May be exposed to high noise levels.

Available for call back 24 hours a day for emergency and/or maintenance issues. Works a rotating weekend shift.
