Job Description

Radiology Tech Student

JOB SUMMARY

Under the direction of a Radiologist, and under the direct supervision of an ARRT Registered Radiologic Technologist, performs radiographic procedures at appropriate technical level. Performs a variety of technical procedures that will require independent judgment, with ingenuity and initiative to apply prescribed ionizing radiation for radiologic diagnosis. Assumes responsibility for designated areas or procedures as required, including specialized radiographic areas such as Special Procedures assistant, Mammography, CT assistant, etc.

Recognizes the purpose of employment is to prioritize the patient as number one, and to put forth the utmost quality as a Technologist.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS include the following, other duties may be assigned:

  1. Maintains a positive and professional atmosphere for patients and personnel. Demonstrates interpersonal skills necessary to interact effectively with patients and personnel who may be under physical or emotional stress, and gather and exchange patient information with nursing personnel and physicians.
  1. Transfers and properly positions patients for examinations to obtain desired radiographic results according to physician specifications. Provides immobilization as required and protection in accordance with prescribed safety standards.
  1. Selects and operates equipment, selecting proper technical factors on an individual patient basis.
  1. Selects and loads proper film cassettes, using film markers correctly and consistently.
  1. Has film developed either by darkroom personnel or self, as required.
  1. Assists physicians in performance of examinations by mixing and pouring contrast media, administering opaque media, assisting in sterile procedures, and other related duties as required. Assists in performing first aid within their scope of knowledge.
  1. Practices sterile techniques and prevents cross contamination. Maintains orderliness and cleanliness, including provision for the contamination-free condition of rooms, equipment and personnel.
  1. Secures and returns supplies.
  1. Reports equipment failure to supervisor using proper forms and maintaining appropriate records.
  1. Responsible for delegated areas of authority in the performance of routine or special procedures. In the absence of the manager or lead technologist, may be designated as acting supervisor.
  1. May be responsible for specific areas of instruction in the Radiologic Technology student program and ancillary personnel.
  1. Cooperates with all department personnel in a positive and professional manner. Maintains a positive and loyal attitude towards employer.
  1. Serves on specific committees dealing with the use of radiation as requested.
  1. May be required to assist in the development of technical factors and film selection.
  1. May assist in the use of a variety of equipment or procedures not routinely taught.
  1. Performs a variety of related clerical tasks as necessary.
  1. Rotates within the department, works various shifts as required.
  1. Maintains professional appearance by adhering to Dress and Grooming Policy and Dress Code of Diagnostic Imaging Services.
  1. Takes advantage of opportunities for continuing education as provided by the department or seminars available for the various specialties, cross-training in specialized areas.
  1. Adheres to prescribed standards for Radiation Safety.
  1. Handles equipment in a responsible, professional manner.
  1. Maintains patient records.
  1. Ensures patient safety, privacy and dignity to the greatest extent possible.

JOB KNOWLEDGE & QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • Highest level of education completed, minimum high school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Must be enrolled in an ARRT Accredited Program and within 6 months of graduation.

Training and Experience

  • Must be competent in all routine diagnostic procedures, including but not limited to: Routine, Fluoroscopic, OR, Trauma, Portable radiographs or fluoroscopy; limited specials such as Myelograms, Venograms, arthrograms, and IVP’s.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • Washington State Department of Health X-Ray Technician Registration License
