JOB TITLE: Health Unit Coordinator (HUC)
POSITION SUMMARY: The Health Unit Coordinator (HUC) supports the daily operations of the nursing unit by coordinating communication, maintaining patient records, and assisting the healthcare team with administrative and organizational tasks. This role serves as a central point of coordination for the unit, helping ensure efficient workflow and timely communication among nurses, physicians, patients, and other departments.

Key Responsibilities
Unit Coordination and Administrative Support

Serve as the central communication hub for the nursing unit.

Answer and appropriately route phone calls, patient call lights, and messages.

Assist with patient admissions, discharges, and transfers by coordinating required documentation and communication.

Communicate effectively with physicians, nurses, ancillary departments, and other healthcare staff.

Monitor and maintain unit supplies, forms, and equipment inventory.

Maintain accurate patient charts, electronic health records, and unit documentation.

Coordinate requests for transport, diagnostic services, and support services.

Ensure patient information is updated, and documentation is completed in a timely and accurate manner.

Support nursing staff with administrative tasks to help maintain efficient unit operations.

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education: High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred Experience: Health Unit Coordinator, medical office, or healthcare administrative experience. Familiarity with electronic health records (EHR) systems preferred.

This role is performed in a hospital or clinical unit environment and may require:

Ability to sit for extended periods while performing administrative and documentation tasks.

Frequent standing and walking within the nursing unit.

Frequent reaching, bending, and light lifting of supplies or charts up to 20 pounds.

Manual dexterity required for typing, filing, and handling documentation.
