This role is focused on hands-on field work supporting the testing, commissioning, and validation of high-voltage substation protection and control systems across critical power infrastructure. You will travel extensively nationwide to perform advanced relay testing, system verification, and energization support for transmission, generation, and distribution projects. The position requires strong technical expertise in protective relays and electrical testing equipment used in complex utility environments. You will work directly in the field alongside engineering and commissioning teams to ensure system reliability, safety, and compliance with industry standards. This is a highly mobile, physically active role suited for professionals who thrive in dynamic outdoor environments and enjoy solving technical challenges on-site. The work has a direct impact on the safe and reliable delivery of electrical power across the U.S.
- Perform testing and commissioning of protection and control systems in high-voltage substations ranging from 15 kV to 500 kV, ensuring system accuracy and operational readiness.
- Execute hands-on protective relay testing using industry-standard equipment such as Omicron CMC 256/356, Doble F6150, and related test sets across SEL, GE, Basler, and Beckwith relay platforms.
- Conduct control scheme verification, CT/PT circuit testing, relay settings uploads, and both static and dynamic system validation procedures.
- Lead and participate in on-site safety practices including tailgate meetings, job hazard analyses (JHAs), and compliance with regulatory and client safety requirements.
- Coordinate field logistics including equipment setup, testing preparation, calibration tracking, and deployment planning for multi-day site assignments.
- Document all field activities accurately using digital reporting tools, mobile applications, and standardized field documentation systems.
- 3–20 years of hands-on experience in electrical testing and commissioning within utility, energy, or power infrastructure environments.
- Strong expertise in protective relays (SEL, GE, Basler, Beckwith) and substation protection and control systems.
- Practical experience with high-voltage equipment including circuit breakers, power transformers, instrument transformers, and related substation components.
- Familiarity with industry standards such as NETA, IEEE, and NFPA related to electrical testing and safety compliance.
- Proficiency with relay testing and engineering software such as Omicron Test Universe, ProTesT, Protection Suite, ENOSERV RTS, or AcSELerator Quickset.
- Ability to work in physically demanding outdoor environments, including lifting equipment up to 35 lbs independently and up to 100 lbs with assistance.
- Strong documentation and communication skills with attention to detail in field reporting and compliance records.
- Valid driver’s license with a clean driving record and willingness to travel up to 80% nationwide.
- High school diploma or equivalent required; additional technical education is a plus but not mandatory.
- Competitive compensation based on experience and field expertise
- High travel opportunity with nationwide exposure to large-scale energy infrastructure projects
- Hands-on work with industry-leading protection and control technologies
- Opportunities to work on critical high-voltage transmission and utility systems
- Ongoing technical experience across multiple relay platforms and testing tools
