Job Description
Position Summary
The Sheet Metal & Structural Welder is responsible for the fabrication, ?t-up, welding, and repair of sheet metal and structural steel components in accordance with applicable American Welding Society (AWS) standards, including AWS D9.1 Sheet Metal Welding
Code and AWS D1.1 Structural Welding Code – Steel. The position requires the ability to interpret engineering drawings, welding symbols, and Welding Procedure Speci?cations (WPS) while producing high-quality welds that meet company and customer requirements. AWS D9.1 governs sheet metal welding applications, while AWS D1.1 covers structural steel welding requirements.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Perform GTAW (TIG), GMAW (MIG), FCAW, and SMAW welding processes as
required.
Weld sheet metal components, ductwork, enclosures, supports, and fabricated
assemblies in compliance with AWS D9.1 requirements.
Weld structural steel components, frames, supports, platforms, and assemblies in
accordance with AWS D1.1 requirements.
Read and interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, weld maps, speci?cations, and
welding symbols.
Perform layout, ?t-up, tack welding, and ?nal welding of fabricated assemblies.
Verify material identi?cation, dimensions, tolerances, and weld preparation before
welding.
Follow approved Welding Procedure Speci?cations (WPS) and maintain weld quality
standards.
Conduct visual inspection of completed welds and correct discontinuities as
required.
Maintain welding certi?cations and quali?cations applicable to assigned work.
Follow all company safety procedures, OSHA requirements, and welding safety
practices.
Maintain a clean and organized work area.
Required Qualifications
High school diploma or GED preferred.
Minimum 3 years of welding and fabrication experience in sheet metal and
structural steel applications.
Demonstrated knowledge of AWS D9.1 and AWS D1.1 welding requirements.
Ability to pass company welding qualification tests.
Experience using precision measuring instruments including tape measures,
squares, calipers, and levels.
Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
You must sign up with Local 67 (Union).
Preferred Qualifications
Ability to perform and pass AWS Welder Certification.
Experience with stainless steel, galvanized steel, and carbon steel fabrication.
Previous experience in industrial, commercial, HVAC, manufacturing, or structural
steel fabrication environments.
Forklift, aerial lift, or rigging experience.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Ability to recognize and correct welding defects.
Knowledge of distortion control and heat management techniques.
Ability to perform welds in at, horizontal, vertical, and overhead positions as
required.
Strong attention to detail and workmanship standards.
Effective communication and teamwork skills
Physical Requirements
Ability to stand, walk, bend, kneel, and climb for extended periods.
Frequently lift and carry up to 50 pounds; occasional lifting up to 75 pounds with
assistance.
Ability to work in fabrication shops, construction sites, and industrial environments.
Must be capable of wearing required PPE including welding helmet, respirator,
gloves, safety glasses, hearing protection, and protective clothing.
Work Environment
Exposure to welding fumes, sparks, noise, heat, and changing environmental
conditions.
Work may be performed indoors and outdoors depending on project requirements.
Overtime and weekend work may be required to meet production schedules.
Certifications
AWS D1.1 Structural Steel Welder Qualification (preferred or required based on
project scope).
AWS D9.1 Sheet Metal Welder Quali?cation (preferred or required based on project
scope).
OSHA 10 or OSHA 30 certification preferred.
This position is responsible for producing safe, code-compliant weldments that meet customer specifications, quality standards, and applicable AWS welding codes.
