Job Description
Description:
The Railcar Mover / Spotter is responsible for safely moving, spotting, and securing railcars within the facility and rail yard. This position works closely with locomotive operators, ground personnel, and facility operations to ensure railcars are placed in the correct locations for loading, unloading, and switching operations. Employees will learn to operate Shuttlewagon equipment and locomotives while performing ground operations and safety inspections.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:- Walk the ground ahead of railcar movements to ensure tracks are clear and safe.
- Spot and position railcars at designated loading and unloading locations.
- Safely couple and uncouple railcars.
- Operate track switches and derail devices.
- Inspect railcars, tracks, and equipment for safety issues or defects.
- Communicate with crew members using radios and hand signals.
- Assist with switching operations and rail yard organization.
- Learn to safely operate Shuttlewagon equipment and locomotives.
- Follow all railroad, OSHA, and company safety regulations.
- Maintain awareness of surroundings and moving equipment at all times.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
- High school diploma or GED preferred.
- Previous rail, industrial, or heavy equipment experience preferred but not required.
- Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
- Ability to walk long distances on uneven surfaces.
- Ability to lift, climb, bend, and work around moving equipment.
- Strong attention to safety and communication skills.
- Willingness to learn rail operations and locomotive/Shuttlewagon operation.
- Must be able to work flexible schedules, including nights, weekends, and overtime if needed.
- Frequent walking, climbing, bending, and standing.
- Ability to work around loud noise, moving railcars, and heavy machinery.
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds.
- Must be able to safely mount and dismount rail equipment.
- Outdoor rail yard and industrial facility environment.
- Exposure to varying weather conditions, dust, noise, and moving equipment.
