Position Summary:
The Retail Sales Manager is responsible for oversight of the Whispering Winds Gift Shop and Giizhik Market to include the planning, directing, and controlling of store operations ensuring maximum sales and profitability through exceptional customer service, marketing, merchandising, inventory, personnel management and controlling operating costs and shrinkage. The Retail Sales Manager will provide responsible and accountable fiscal management of retail operations by implementing and maintaining internal control standards and ensuring compliance with operational policies and procedures. The incumbent shall demonstrate sound leadership principles in all aspects of staff supervision and management to assure high morale, employee retention, and exceptional service delivery.
Core Duties and Responsibilities:
The Retail Sales Manager is responsible for the following duties:
SALES AND CUSTOMER SERVICE
The Retail and Sales Manager is responsible for all aspects of customer service and sales to maximize revenue and profitability at both the Gift Shop:
- Ensure monthly promotional programs are followed and that employees understand and are familiar with all monthly promotions and promotional merchandise.
- Greet everyone and proactively approach customers to support their shopping experience.
- Develop creative in-store merchandise displays and coordinate sales promotion activities; prepare and/or direct employees engaged in sales work.
- Motivate employees to “suggestive sell” products and services to every customer.
- Listen closely to the customer’s needs and offer ideas on how to improve product selection and service to meet those needs.
- Look for opportunities and offer suggestions to increase sales and reduce operating costs.
- Operate and maintain a clean, well-merchandised and safe environment for employees and customers.
- Understand the importance of properly priced merchandise and availability of products.
- Direct training of all employees to ensure satisfactory performance and customer satisfaction in sales, service, and equipment required to perform essential job duties.
- Motivate employees and monitor performance in providing a high level of excellence in customer service.
- Ensure employees handle customer transactions within 90 seconds of the customer approaching the sales counter.
- Resolve customer complaints or issues expeditiously to a positive outcome.
MERCHANDISING
The Retail Sales Manager is responsible for the accuracy of store inventory levels to include the following duties:
- Formulate pricing policies on merchandise according to requirements for profitability for store operations.
- Accurately price all products in the store.
- Check product freshness dates and codes to ensure that only current products are offered to customers.
- Monitor product movement and inventory levels to ensure the selling floor is adequately stocked; rotate merchandise on a first in, first out basis.
- Order merchandise or prepare requisitions to replenish merchandise in a timely manner.
- Ensure products, shelving, displays, counters, and equipment are routinely maintained and cleaned.
- Ensure effective placement of promotional signage and marketing displays and presentations.
ADMINISTRATION
The Retail Sales Manager is responsible for a variety of administrative duties and fiscal responsibilities to ensure effective store operations:
- Analyze and measure business trends; develop and implement plans to maximize sales and meet or exceed goals and objectives.
- Control shrinkage and overhead expenses including labor.
- Comparison shop and make price adjustments as appropriate.
- Maintain operating records and transactions and prepare/record daily record of transactions for accounting.
- Ensure completion of all daily, weekly, and monthly administrative reports.
- Develop annual budget and monitor monthly financial statements.
- Prepare deposits from the previous day’s business.
- Ensure proper reconciliation and deposits in a timely manner.
- Ensure completion of all daily and weekly sales reports on time and according to procedures.
- Determine all invoice retail and cost amounts and record them on the perpetual inventory system according to procedures.
- Understand the key checks and balances within the reporting system and how they relate to store operations.
- Implement all operational controls effectively and according to procedures to minimize store losses; recommends changes as necessary.
- Ensure all employees understand and follow all company policies, guidelines, and procedures.
LEADERSHIP & PERSONNEL MANAGEMENT
The Retail Sales Manager is responsible for providing effective leadership and personnel management to maintain morale, reduce turnover and ensure quality customer service:
- Recruit, interview, and train employees to ensure adequate staffing levels and minimize payment of overtime.
- Plan and prepare work schedules and assign employees to specific duties.
- Ensure compliance of employees with established security, sales, and record keeping procedures and practices.
- Ensure that shifts are covered in emergency/sick/vacation situations.
- Work on weekend or afternoon shifts and perform work of subordinates as needed.
- Provide leadership by working as a team leader with employees and setting a high level of performance standards.
- Continually evaluate and correct employee performance issues; conduct performance evaluations and recommend pay increases.
- Train and develop store leads and supervisors in all aspects of business; direct and monitor training and development for all store personnel.
- Maintain professionalism in all interactions with staff, vendors, and the public.
- Confer with or seek advisement from the Human Resources department regarding hiring, termination, investigations, leave requests, unemployment, wages, and benefits.
- Provide leadership by working as a team leader with employees and setting a high level of performance standards and expectations.
SAFETY AND SECURITY
The Retail Sales Manager is responsible for guest and employee safety and protection of store assets:
- Know all emergency response procedures in case of fire, accidents, injuries, or robbery.
- Ensure staff are trained and knowledgeable in fire extinguishers and emergency exits.
- Follow all Company procedures regarding cash deposits, cash levels, work fund, cash drops and counting cash.
- Ensure that all vendors are checking in properly according to the Company Vendor Check-In Policy.
- Report all workplace injuries to Human Resources within 24 hours and ensure the First Report of Injury forms are immediately filled out and submitted.
- Follow all store and company policies, procedures and guidelines relating to safety and security.
- Ensure adherence to cleanliness and sanitation standards for food preparation and service.
- Arrange for repair and maintenance of equipment, fixtures; monitor preventative maintenance schedules on all equipment.

Qualifications – Education and Experience:
Minimum Qualifications:
- At least 2 years of retail management experience to include the supervision and management of
employees. - A strong background in managing budgets, inventory, marketing, promotions, recordkeeping,
Point of Sales systems, inventory control software, systems, and administration. - Honesty, integrity, intelligence, common sense, and goal orientation.
- Experience in retail information systems and proficiency in Excel spreadsheet applications, word processing and email.
- Certification in Safe Food Handling or be willing to be certified.
- Knowledge of accounting principles, inventory practices, and financial analysis.
- Supervision and management experience including the ability to train employees.
- Sales experience.
- Customer service skills and/or experience in working with the public.
- Safety conscious.
- Goal and team oriented.
- Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
- Ability to work shift work and weekends, as necessary.

Preferred Qualifications:
- 5 years of retail management experience including the supervision and management of employees.
- Bachelor’s degree.
- Certification in Safe Food Handling.
