Job Overview:

The Sterile Processing 101 program at RWJBH is based on the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA)
Training requirements and complies with its policies and procedures in preparing students for the certification exam. The program prepares graduates to work as a Registered Central Service Technician. A sterile processing technician is responsible for decontaminating, inspecting, assembling, disassembling, packaging, and sterilizing reusable surgical instruments or devices in a health care facility. Is responsible for reporting identified safety issues such as hazardous environments (i.e. damaged floors/walls/ceiling tiles/unsecured areas) and medical errors, etc

Essential Functions:

• Answers bell, phone, etc., and relays all messages to the appropriate person.
• Assists in maintaining all areas within Central Services in a safe and clean manner.
• Attends and passes the Central Service Course. Attends all inservice programs given in SPD/Central Service.
• Conducts routine examination of expiration dates o f sterile supplies and storage methods on units and rotates supplies.
• Delivers all stat orders as soon as requested.
• Delivers case carts to OR and Delivery Room daily.
• Demonstrates knowledge of basic concepts of Infection Control, and adapts this knowledge to equipment handling.
• Hand process all reusable needles and any appropriate items as necessary.
• Identifies, assembles, packages, wraps and sterilizes all reusable instruments and technique trays
• Maintains record keeping system within Central Service department.
• Operates and maintains all mechanical cleaning machinery, sterilizer, cart washer, decomats and drying cabinets, etc. within the Central Service department.
• Operates HIS and MAS systems as they pertain to Central Service functions.
• Performs all other duties when requested as it pertains to Central Service function.
• Picks all instruments and assembles instrument trays and baskets for OR, ED, Delivery Room, Minor Surgery, X-Ray, nursing units and various other departments.
• Process all manual vouchers daily.
• Process and maintains portable equipment for safe patient use
• Process and maintains surgical instruments for OR, Delivery Room, Dental clinic, clinics, ED, X-Ray, Minor Surgery and nursing units.
• Process trays, basins, glassware, tubings and other supplies.
• Replenishes supplies to sterile storage. Examine and rotates sterile supplies for maximum utilization, paying particular attention to expiration dates.
• Services all nursing units, ED, clinics, Minor Surgery, X-ray, daily to collect soiled supplies and equipment.
• Understands the basic concepts of steam and ETO sterilization and safety precautions necessary in the operation of the steam sterilizer and ETO sterilizer.
• Understands the cleaning products and procedures used in Central Service and is able to choose the appropriate cleaning method for each item.
