Job Description
Club J is an exciting and fun after-care program housed at the Valley of the Sun J. Students in PreK-4th Grade participate in a variety of counselor-led activities, including gym games, art projects, STEM challenges, Ninja Course, Gaga, and so much more!
The After School Youth Counselor, under the supervision of the After School Programming + Camp Operations Director, serves as a member of the Valley of the Sun J’s professional staff with responsibilities that, at times, extend beyond the limits of their specialized functions. The individual works within the framework of the overall agency program and objectives while focusing primarily on the following:
DAILY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Implement pre-planned activities and plan activities when called upon.
- Manage transitions between activities
- Follow the daily schedule to ensure students are where they need to be, always
- Assist with the daily pick up and check out process in accordance with outlined protocol and safety measures
- Distribute provided snacks in accordance with ADHS regulations and recognition of any food allergies applicable to students
- Watch students in all spaces, checking for and promoting safety
- Demonstrate a positive and professional attitude
- Participate in staff development, including team building and practical training
- Communicate effectively with children, peers, supervisors, fellow facility staff, and families
- Respect supplies and spaces by keeping all spaces organized and clean
- Utilize radio appropriately (i.e. frequent communication, always having radio on person, keeping radio away from children, returning it to the charging station before leaving)
- Additional duties as assigned
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS / DEMANDS
- Standing, walking, repetitive motions, bending, stretching, going up and down stairs, lifting up to 20 pounds
- Ability to walk, stand, and perform essential job duties in excessive heat during select times of the year
EDUCATION / SPECIALIZED TRAINING
- Must be at least 16 years old and actively enrolled in high school, college, and/or have a high school diploma/GED/equivalent
- Background check (for those 18 and older)
- Acquisition of Arizona Fingerprint Clearance card, CPR certification, and First Aid certification
EXPERIENCE & SKILLS
- Previous childcare, teaching, youth coaching, and/or camp counselor experience preferred
- Flexibility, time management skills, and a positive attitude required
SAFETY
- Keep eyes on students at all times
- Accompany students to and from all spaces
- Help students make safe choices, using sound judgment to determine what choices are deemed “safe” and what choices are deemed “unsafe”
SCHEDULE
Regularly Scheduled After-School Programming, August-May. Must be able to work a minimum of 2 days per week
- Monday-Thursday, 2:30p-6p
- Friday, 2:30p-5:30p
Additional Programming (all staff must commit to one additional program each quarter)
- Early Release Days, 11:30a-closing
- School’s Out with Shemesh, 7:30am-1pm, 9am-1pm, 12:30-4pm, 12:30-5:30pm select days of the year
- Kids Night Out – Select Saturdays, 4:30p-8:30p
- Kids Club – Monday-Sunday, 9am-1pm/Monday-Thursday, 4pm-7pm
- Must be at least 16 years old and actively enrolled in high school, college, and/or have a high school diploma/GED/equivalent
- Background check (for those 18 and older)
