Job Description

Business Analyst & Software Developer for the State Bar of Michigan (Full Time - Hybrid) Lansing, MI.

About the Role

Are you an analytical problem-solver who bridges the gap between business needs and hands-on software engineering? The State Bar of Michigan is seeking a Business Analyst & Software Developer to translate organizational requirements into scalable technical solutions, design and develop software applications, and ensure systems align with organizational goals. In this role, you will excel at both strategic thinking and technical execution across the full software development lifecycle. Reporting within our IT & Operations team, you will collaborate closely with product owners, QA, UX, and operational teams to deliver cohesive, high-impact systems while providing end-user support and continuous system optimization.

What You’ll Do

  • Requirements & Workflow Analysis: Engage stakeholders to elicit, document, and validate business needs, user stories, and acceptance criteria. Analyze current workflows, identify inefficiencies, and design optimized future-state processes.
  • Technical Design & Architecture: Translate business requirements into technical specifications, architecture diagrams, and clear development plans.
  • Software Development & Integration: Build, test, and deploy applications using modern programming languages and frameworks. Implement RESTful APIs and manage complex system integrations.
  • Data Modeling & Analytics: Perform data modeling, write SQL queries, and generate insights to support organizational decision-making.
  • Quality Assurance & Testing: Assist in test planning, execute unit testing, and support User Acceptance Testing (UAT) to deliver clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
  • Documentation & User Support: Create and maintain comprehensive documentation, including technical designs, release notes, and user guides. Provide training and ongoing technical support to end users.
  • Continuous Improvement & Troubleshooting: Diagnose system issues, perform root cause analysis, implement long-term fixes, and identify opportunities to enhance development workflows.

What You Bring

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree required.
  • Experience: 7+ years of experience in software development and business analysis, with familiarity across full SDLC, Agile, and Waterfall frameworks.
  • Technical Proficiency: Hands-on experience with object-oriented programming (e.g., Python, Java, C#, JavaScript), SQL, data modeling, RESTful APIs, and Git-based version control. Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Adobe Acrobat, iMIS, and DNN.
  • Interpersonal & Analytical Savvy: Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills; clear, confident communication style with a demonstrated ability to build stakeholder relationships and align differing perspectives toward a shared solution.

Preferred Attributes

  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or DNN.
  • Exposure to DevOps practices, including CI/CD pipelines and containerization.
  • Understanding of UI/UX design principles and secure coding practices.
  • Knowledge of data privacy, access control awareness, or relevant industry-specific domain knowledge.
