Summary

The Civil Leadman is responsible for leading and coordinating the daily activities of civil construction crews on industrial, commercial, and heavy construction projects. This position works under the direction of the Foreman or Superintendent and assists with planning, scheduling, and supervising work involving concrete, excavation, grading, foundations, underground utilities, structural supports, and other civil construction activities. The Civil Leadman ensures work is completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with project specifications, company standards, and customer requirements.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of industrial or heavy civil construction experience required.
  • Minimum of 1 year of lead or supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, drawings, and project specifications.
  • Knowledge of excavation, grading, concrete, formwork, and underground utility installation.
  • Current OSHA 10 certification preferred; OSHA 30 preferred.
  • Valid driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
  • TWIC card or ability to obtain one, if required by project.
  • Ability to pass all pre-employment, site-specific, and client-required screenings and training.
  • Ability to work overtime, weekends, and travel as required.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of civil construction methods, materials, equipment, and industry best practices.
  • Knowledge of construction safety standards, OSHA regulations, and hazard recognition.
  • Ability to read, interpret, and apply blueprints, plans, specifications, and layout measurements.
  • Strong leadership and crew coordination skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with supervisors, coworkers, subcontractors, and clients.
  • Strong problem-solving and decision-making abilities.
  • Ability to plan work activities and prioritize tasks to meet project schedules.
  • Skilled in the safe use of hand tools, power tools, and construction equipment.
  • Ability to perform mathematical calculations related to measurements, elevations, and material quantities.
  • Ability to maintain accurate records, daily reports, and project documentation.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision while leading a crew.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

Essential Functions

  • Lead and direct civil construction crew members in the performance of daily work activities.
  • Assign tasks and monitor crew productivity to ensure work is completed safely and efficiently.
  • Assist Foremen and Superintendents with planning and coordinating work activities.
  • Interpret and implement construction drawings, specifications, and project requirements.
  • Perform and oversee excavation, grading, trenching, backfilling, concrete placement, formwork installation, and underground utility work.
  • Verify measurements, elevations, and layouts using appropriate tools and equipment.
  • Ensure all work meets quality standards, project specifications, and customer expectations.
  • Conduct jobsite safety meetings and promote compliance with all site-specific safety requirements.
  • Inspect work areas, equipment, and tools to identify and correct safety concerns.
  • Train, mentor, and assist less experienced employees in proper work methods and safety procedures.
  • Coordinate material, equipment, and labor needs with supervision to maintain project schedules.
  • Complete daily reports, production records, and other required documentation.
  • Communicate project progress, challenges, and resource needs to supervisors.
  • Maintain housekeeping and organization of work areas.
  • Participate in emergency response activities as required by the project or customer site.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, reach, climb, balance, push, and pull while performing pipefitting activities.
  • Ability to perform physically demanding work throughout the scheduled shift.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and handle heavier piping materials, tools, or equipment using appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work from scaffolds, elevated work platforms, pipe racks, and other industrial work areas as required.
  • Ability to perform repetitive movements associated with measuring, layout, fitting, bolting, tool use, and material handling.
  • Ability to work on uneven, muddy, rocky, or otherwise variable walking and working surfaces.
  • Ability to work outdoors in heat, humidity, cold, rain, wind, and other weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to:
  • hard hat, safety glasses, gloves, hearing protection, high-visibility clothing, steel-toed footwear, FR clothing, fall protection, and other project-specific PPE.

Work Environment

  • Work is primarily performed at active industrial construction, maintenance, turnaround, and customer facilities.
  • Work may be performed in refinery, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, and other heavy industrial environments.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, moving equipment, piping systems, and other conditions typical of industrial construction and maintenance.
  • Work may be performed around operating process units, piping systems, elevated work areas, excavations, structures, mobile equipment, and ongoing construction or maintenance activities.
  • Work may require the use of ladders, scaffolds, elevated work platforms, and fall-protection systems.
