About This Position
SCHEDULE: Full-time, rotating, including holidays and weekends. We have rotating shift and swing 2PM-11PM, including weekends
ABOUT GATEWAY WEST
Gateway West is Albuquerque’s largest shelter, providing a safe, welcoming environment for men and women experiencing homelessness. On average, we serve 600 guests per night, with cold winter nights bringing in over 700. Here, guests receive a warm bed, meals, secure storage, and access to resources that help them move toward safe, stable housing. Shuttle service is provided daily, and our trauma-informed, low-barrier approach ensures everyone feels supported.
As an Intake Specialist, you are the first point of contact for our guests. You will:
- Manage the intake process for all guests, ensuring smooth and efficient transitions into the shelter.
- Maintain accurate records of interactions and services using HMIS (Homeless Management Information System).
- Coordinate with internal teams and external agencies to create a safe environment for guests and their pets.
- Assist guests with assessments like the VI-SPDAT and connect them to supportive services, case management, and job resources.
- Provide a compassionate, trauma-informed presence that supports guests’ paths to stability and housing.

You are culturally competent, flexible, and ready to support guests with sensitivity, discretion, and professionalism.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS AND COMPETENCIES
- High school diploma or equivalent; additional education in social work, human services, or a related field preferred
- Previous experience working with individuals experiencing homelessness or in a supportive housing setting is highly desirable
- Proficiency in using HMIS or similar client management systems for data entry and reporting

- Strong understanding of trauma-informed care principles and a commitment to applying them in practice
- Ability to work effectively with diverse populations and demonstrate cultural competency
- Excellent communication, organizational, and problem-solving skills
- Ability to maintain professionalism and confidentiality in a fast-paced, high-stress environment
- Valid driver’s license and ability to travel locally as needed
- Ability to assess and respond to clients' needs with sensitivity, creating a supportive space that acknowledges the effects of trauma on behavior and communication
