About This Position
The Lake Oswego Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, team-oriented problem-solver with outstanding customer service skills to work in its bustling public library. The Circulation Department of the Lake Oswego Public Library endeavors to provide excellent customer service and build relationships with users because we recognize the vital role we play in creating a supportive, meaningful, and enriching environment for all members of society to seek free and equal access to information.
This is a part-time, 30 hour per week position (not to exceed 39 hours per week) represented by the Lake Oswego Municipal Employees’ Association (LOMEA)/ American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME). The schedule for this position is Sundays and Mondays 8:30am - 5:30pm, Tuesdays 10:15am – 7:15pm, and Wednesdays 12:15pm – 7:15pm.
Under the supervision of the Library Manager, the Library Assistant II is responsible for a variety of activities that range from routine clerical duties to moderately complex and challenging leadership. In addition to maintaining the responsibilities of a Library Assistant I, incumbents of the Library Assistant II/PIC position will perform the following key duties:
- Operating library outreach vehicles and participating in outreach events.
- Assisting other Library Assistants in dealing with complex questions or issues with the computer system, patrons, or Library procedures.
- Monitoring shared Library email accounts and corresponding with patrons.
- Cataloging newspapers, periodicals, and other Library materials for patron use.
- Double checking the clerical work of other Library Assistants in conjunction with a Lead Library Assistant or Library Manager.
- Creating and maintains library signage or other graphics.
- Processing Library materials that have been returned incomplete or damaged.
- Initiating the Library’s response to urgent situations and emergencies that may arise; contacting emergency personnel, service personnel, or Library administration when designated as PIC, with resources as necessary.
- Ensuring smooth operation of Circulation division, including filling vacancies as needed and directing volunteers if necessary.
- Performing opening and closing related activities including: arming/disarming the building security system, locking/unlocking Library doors at opening and closing, securing cash drawer, making PA announcements about Library closing time, and logging out computer terminals in the Circulation division.
Preferred candidates will have strong technical skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and the internet, as well as applicable experience working with integrated library systems (ILS). Qualified applicants will be knowledgeable and experienced in library methods, procedures and policies. This is typically achieved through two years of work experience with job duties comparable to that of a Library Assistant I with the City of Lake Oswego and education equivalent to graduation from high school. College level course work is desirable.
Additionally, qualified candidates need to be able to accurately perform their duties through careful attention to detail; communicate effectively and deal tactfully and courteously with the public and City employees; work independently as well as collaboratively in a team environment; operate manual and automated library systems, office equipment and keyboards, including various application programs; assemble, reach and retrieve materials; interpret and apply City and departmental rules with good judgment; analyze situations accurately and take effective action.
