Museum Educator Contractor at MUSEUM OF AFRICAN AMERICAN HISTORY – Boston, Massachusetts

The Museum of African American History connects colonial and early African American history & culture in Boston and the larger New England area with the abolition of slavery and current explorations of race and the struggle for human rights.

Home to four original African American buildings built at the birth of the nation and still standing, the museum illuminates, interprets, and preserved the birthplace of the abolitionist movement and the continuing struggle for human rights.

The Museum is a not-for-profit history institution that began holding exhibitions and public gatherings in 1963 and is nationally and internationally known for its collection of historic sites in Boston and Nantucket, including two African Meeting Houses Abiel Smith School, Seneca Boston- Florence Higginbotham House, Black Heritage Trails.

Scope of Work:

The Museum Educator Contractor will develop and deliver educational programming (i.e. conduct tours) for diverse audiences at MAAH's Boston and Nantucket locations. Key deliverables include:

Program Development

• Audit existing educational materials and programs
• Research current museum education best practices
• Design new curriculum framework aligned with state standards
• Create lesson plans for PreK-12, college, and senior programming
• Develop evaluation metrics and feedback mechanisms

Implementation

• Launch pilot programs for each target audience
• Train museum staff on new educational materials
• Create digital content supplements
• Establish community partnerships
• Document program procedures and guidelines

Evaluation and Refinement

• Collect and analyze program feedback
• Refine materials based on pilot results
• Create sustainability plan for ongoing programs
• Develop recommendations for future programming
• Submit final report with metrics and outcomes

Project Deliverables:

• Conduct tours and educational sessions for visitor groups
• Design and implement interactive education programs aligned with museum mission
• Develop curriculum materials and activity guides for PreK-12, college, and senior audiences
• Create evaluation metrics and report on program effectiveness
• Collaborate with museum staff on program promotion and community outreach
• Maintain educational resources and materials

Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in education, museum studies, history, or related field (Master's preferred)
• 3+ years museum education or similar experience
• Demonstrated knowledge of African American history
• Proven track record in curriculum development
• Experience with educational technology and digital learning tools
• Strong presentation and communication abilities
• Ability to work independently and manage multiple projects

Contract Terms:

• Independent contractor status
• Project-based compensation
• Flexible schedule required, including some weekends
• Remote work flexibility with on-site presence as needed
• Own equipment and software required
• Deliverable-based payment schedule
