Senior Accountant in Kalamazoo, Michigan at Optimed Pharmacy Inc
Job Description
The Impact of This Role
The Senior Accountant is a core contributor to the accuracy and timeliness of OptiMed’s financial reporting during one of the most dynamic chapters in the company’s history. As OptiMed grows, clean and well-supported books are what allow leadership to invest confidently in the people, sites, and capabilities that connect patients to critical therapies.
Reporting to the Controller, the Senior Accountant owns key parts of the monthly close — complex journal entries, balance sheet reconciliations, and the supporting schedules behind them — across our business lines. This is a hands-on technical seat: someone who can work through a difficult reconciliation independently, document it so it holds up to review and audit, and help less experienced team members do the same.
Because our businesses each carry their own revenue, cost, and reimbursement mechanics — and because we are modernizing our core systems — the Senior Accountant has a real opportunity to shape how our close, reconciliations, and controls work as the organization scales.
What You’ll Be Doing
- Prepare monthly, quarterly, and year-end close entries — accruals, prepaids, fixed assets and depreciation, and reclassifications — with clear, reviewable support
- Own balance sheet reconciliations for assigned accounts, investigating and resolving reconciling items promptly and escalating issues with a recommended fix
- Record and reconcile intercompany and shared-service activity across entities, supporting a clean consolidation
- Prepare monthly flux and variance analyses that explain account movements by their real operating drivers
- Execute and document assigned internal controls, and recommend improvements where gaps or manual workarounds exist
- Prepare PBC schedules and support for the annual external audit, and respond to auditor requests during fieldwork
- Support ERP and pharmacy-system transitions through chart of accounts mapping, data validation, parallel-period reconciliations, and legacy-to-new tie-outs
- Identify opportunities to standardize and automate recurring entries, reconciliations, and reports
- Support sales/use, property, and other tax compliance in partnership with outside advisors
- Partner with FP&A, Billing and Revenue Cycle, and Pharmacy Operations to source data and resolve discrepancies at their origin
- Review the work of staff accountants and provide training and guidance on close procedures
Who You’ll Be Working With
This role reports to the Controller and works alongside the accounting team, with day-to-day guidance and review of staff accountant work. The Senior Accountant partners closely with FP&A, Pharmacy Operations, Infusion Services, Billing and Revenue Cycle, Accounts Payable, Payroll, and IT, and works directly with external auditors and tax advisors.
Skills and Experience You’ll Bring to the Table
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or a related field
- 4+ years of progressive accounting experience, including hands-on ownership of month-end close entries and balance sheet reconciliations
- Solid working knowledge of US GAAP, ideally applied in a multi-entity environment
- Experience preparing audit support and working directly with external auditors
- CPA, or progress toward CPA licensure, preferred
- Public accounting experience preferred
- Healthcare experience across one or more of: specialty or retail pharmacy, infusion / medical-benefit billing, or PBM operations, preferred
- Exposure to pharmacy gross-to-net mechanics (rebates, chargebacks, copay assistance) or payer reimbursement (contractual allowances, denials) a plus
- Advanced Excel skills (lookups, pivot tables, large data sets); comfort pulling and reconciling data across multiple systems
- Experience supporting an ERP implementation or major financial-systems migration a plus
Competencies You’ll Bring to the Table
- Exceptional attention to detail, with workpapers that stand on their own
- Ownership mentality — follows reconciling items through to resolution rather than carrying them forward
- Analytical problem-solving across complex, multi-line transactions
- Ability to meet close deadlines and manage competing priorities in a fast-paced, high-growth environment
- Clear communicator who asks good questions and can explain accounting topics to non-financial partners
- Trusted with confidential information
- Collaborative, cross-functional mindset across finance, operations, billing, and IT
- Adaptable through systems change and organizational growth
- Growth mindset, openness to feedback, and a bias toward continuous process improvement
- Strong documentation and knowledge-sharing practices
Work Environment
This is a full-time, hybrid position based at OptiMed’s headquarters in Kalamazoo, Michigan, with occasional travel to sites as the business requires. The role operates in a fast-paced, high-growth environment, with heavier workloads around month-end close and the annual audit, and involves prolonged computer use and work across multiple financial systems and tools.
