THE DEPARTMENT:
The Engineering & Public Works Department is responsible for maintaining the City's public assets, including all infrastructure, right of way, parks, facilities and the City’s vehicle and equipment fleet. The Engineering Division oversees the City’s Capital Improvement Program (CIP), Storm Water & Environmental Compliance, Traffic Safety, and Engineering Permits, Plan Checks and Inspections for private development. The Public Works operations team provides essential services for the community through its four Divisions: Streets & Wastewater Maintenance, Parks Maintenance, Facilities Maintenance, and Fleet & Equipment Maintenance.

THE POSITION:

Under direction, to perform a variety of field and office paraprofessional engineering work of moderate difficulty and perform related duties as required.

ALTERNATIVE WORK SCHEDULE:
This position typically works a 4/10 workweek from 7:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through Thursday. City offices are closed on Fridays. City facilities will also close for a period of approximately two weeks in December with time off for non-essential personnel.


The following duties and responsibilities are representative of those typically performed by positions assigned to this classification. Any single position may not perform all of these duties and/or may perform similar related tasks not listed here.
  • Assists in minor field survey party work; reviews plans, specifications, and sites for projects;
  • Does minor design work for streets, storm drains, sewers, and other Public Works facilities, including design calculations, determination of right-of-way requirements, and preparation of engineering, drawings, plans, and maps.
  • Prepares accurate sketches and permanent plans, diagrams, maps, and supporting data for the preparation of preliminary and final engineering plans, specifications, and cost estimates
  • Uses computer including CAD (Computer Aided Drafting); may make simple field inspections; provides information to the public; investigates engineering problems.
  • Writes reports and makes recommendations; sets and maintains traffic counters.

TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE: Any combination equivalent to training and experience that could likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities will be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be: graduation from high school, including or supplemented by courses in algebra, geometry, trigonometry, and drafting; and one (1) year of increasingly responsible paraprofessional engineering experience. Experience in the use of computers and computer-aided drafting is desirable.
KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS IN: Nomenclature, symbols, methods, practices, and instruments used in engineering, drafting, and surveying; basic engineering mathematics; strengths, properties, and uses of construction materials.
ABILITY TO: Collect and analyze data, transpose drawings and diagrams, and prepare neat and accurate tracings with the use of a computer-aided drafting system; interpret plans, maps, specifications, and legal descriptions; operate surveying equipment and drafting instruments; understand and carry out oral and written instructions; deal effectively with contractors, engineers, and the public; keep records.

LICENSES, CERTIFICATIONS, OR SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Possession of a valid California Class C driver's license is required at the time of appointment.
