Description:

Part-Time (20 hours per week) and PRN

Position Summary

The phlebotomist is a primary link for laboratory and interacts with physicians, guests, family members, and other hospital staff to obtain or clarify lab information. The Phlebotomist/Secretary performs a variety of venipuncture techniques involved in the collection of blood specimens from patients for laboratory procedures used in the diagnosis and treatment of disease.

  • Administrative Laboratory Director
  • Assistant Laboratory Manager
  • Lead Phlebotomist

Functions of the Position

The following functions are not intended to be an exhaustive list of all duties performed by the position recipient:

  • Perform a variety of routine blood drawing procedures to include venipuncture, techniques using standard equipment to include vaccutainer tubes and sleeves, tourniquets, and butterfly needles.
  • Confer with patient to obtain information for laboratory records, explain procedures, allay fears, and elicit cooperation.
  • Utilize standard procedures for the maintenance of positive patient identification (ask patient for name and date of birth and check information on ID band). Record appropriate collection information on proper requisitions.
  • Prepare, process, label, and store (includes making sure that the tubes for Labcorp are put in the correct rack so Labcorp does not have to go searching for specimens) patient specimens and samples according to department procedures using standard techniques and equipment, for subsequent analysis by Clinical Laboratory staff.
  • Assist in the calling, filing and delivery of laboratory reports. This includes checking the LabCorp reports and handling appropriately (due to insurance requirements).
  • Adhere to established policies and procedures and reports to supervisor problems that may adversely affect test performance
  • Maintain a positive attitude in association with the Department’s standard of professionalism in working with patients, staff, and Pathology Consultants.
  • Maintain inventory of supplies. Reorder as required. Stock supplies on carts and hand trays. Directly orders from vendors. Put up stock when it comes into the department.
  • Adhere to Dosher Memorial Hospital’s Standards of Behavior.
  • Attend hospital in-service programs and department meetings.
  • Adhere to hospital and department policies and procedures.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Handle end of year packing or lab results for storage in a timely fashion.
  • Handle any problems with Lab Corp and physicians concerning orders.
  • Result and distribute reports for LabCorp and pathology.
  • Assist lab supervisor with gathering needed information for new test from Lab Corp.
  • Responsible for any problems concerning chain of custody drug screens.
  • Resolve any issues left behind from 2nd and 3rd shift concerning Lab Corp and other issues.
  • Adhere to Dosher Memorial Hospital’s proper dress code which includes the wearing of name badges.
  • Maintain a professional rapport with patients, visitors, doctors, staff, and other departments.
  • Demonstrate maturity and accountability for job performance. Support the philosophy, objectives, and goals of the Department(s) and assess areas of personal and professional growth.
  • Assure the medical providers orders are entered into CPSI/EVIDNET correctly.
  • Maintains a clean working environment, this includes checking the Bio-hazard red boxes/containers and emptying when it is at capacity. Cleaning up any spills of blood or fluids, making sure all trash is picked up off the floor and wiping down counters.
  • Second shift is to pull OP orders daily and place in Medical Records file in the storage room.
  • Assure the reoccurring patient list filled out daily and that second shift phlebotomist takes report to Patient Registration before leaving at night.
Requirements:

Pediatrics/Adolescence/Geriatrics

In addition to technical competency, the laboratory staff receives education regarding the following Age Specific Standards:

  • The vocabulary of a teenager is different from that of someone 70 to 80 years old. The person performing the phlebotomy must be sensitive to word usage for each age.
  • Laboratory personnel demonstrate competence in drawing and processing neonate specimens.
  • Laboratory personnel demonstrate competence in drawing and processing pediatric specimens.
  • Laboratory personnel demonstrate competence in drawing and processing adolescent and adult specimens.
  • Laboratory personnel demonstrate competence in drawing and processing geriatric specimens

Qualifications

Education:

  • High school graduate or equivalent
  • Phlebotomy certificate preferred

Necessary skills:

  • Ability to comprehend and follow instructions
  • Familiar with Regulatory Standards
  • Maintain strictest confidentiality and adhere to all HIPAA guidelines/regulations
  • Ability for rapid mental/muscular coordination simultaneously

Physical Demands:

  • Constant standing or walking, sometimes in a confined space
  • Lifting/carry up to 40 lbs.
  • Push/pull up to 250 lbs.
  • Repetitive twisting and pressure involving hand and finger mobility
  • Reaching at all levels
  • Stooping, bending, kneeling, or crouching
  • Possible exposure to blood borne pathogens
  • Handling cleaning chemicals
  • Working around machinery with moving parts

Protective Equipment Required:

  • Safety glasses
  • Occasional use of rubber gloves or hearing protection
  • PPE as required
  • OR covering
