Overview

The VIRGINIA Class Propulsion Plant Fluid Systems and Components department consists of five groups inside three disciples:

  1. Reactor Plant and Steam Plant Fluid Systems
  2. Steam Valves and Heat Exchangers and Pump Engineered Components
  3. Test Equipment.

These groups are cognizant over respective piping systems, components, or test equipment assemblies and responsible for developing sound technical solutions to emerging construction and test problems arising at new construction shipyards. Additionally, as the lead design yard, these groups are responsible for maintaining the design and requirements of their respective system procurement requirements, qualification testing, delivery, and construction integration of their respective component(s). This may include providing technical oversight and sound engineering recommendations to the supply base, including primary and sub-tier vendors.

Responsibilities of this position may include:

  • Proactive engagement with shipyard trades and test organizations to avoid potential pitfalls and overcome barriers to ensure first-time quality and on-time completion of work,
  • Continuous engagement with vendors, both remotely and on-site, to assist in the development and implementation of manufacturing process changes to overcome barriers and clear bottlenecks to ensure on-time in-yard delivery,
  • Developing technical rationale and sound engineering recommendations to the prime contractors (KAPL, and BPMI) and to the Navy for approval of non-conformances,
  • Design, maintenance, and issuance of test equipment drawings with a focus on both technical quality and overall end user experience, including review of test procedures to ensure designed test equipment meets required specifications and functionality, and
  • Conducting and facilitating feasibility studies, design development, and on-hull implementation of system and component design changes to incorporate performance, acoustic, or manufacturability improvements. As such, frequent interaction with component vendors, customers, and government laboratories may be required, including occasional (up to 25%) travel to vendor facilities.

  • An experienced mentor will be assigned to each engineer and on the job training is expected


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor's of Science degree in Engineering or related technology degree
  • 5+ years of professional, post-graduate engineering experience

Preferred:

  • Bachelor's of Science or higher in Mechanical, Marine, Aerospace, or Manufacturing Engineering
  • Active DOD Secret clearance
  • Prior Naval Nuclear Program experience
