The Role
The Water Quality Specialist is responsible for water quality, water system performance, biosecurity, and system cleanliness across land-based facilities in Maine and Canada. This role plays a critical part in maintaining system integrity, supporting fish health, and ensuring consistent operating standards across all sites.
Key Responsibilities:
Water Quality Monitoring & Testing
- Conduct routine and investigative water testing, including:
- Source water
- Transport water
- Recirculating Aquaculture System (RAS) water
- Analyze results, identify trends, and provide corrective recommendations
System Performance Oversight
- Monitor and assess performance of:
- UV systems (performance and specifications)
- Ozone systems (performance and specifications)
- RAS system performance
- Effluent treatment systems
- Support optimization and troubleshooting of water treatment and filtration systems
Biosecurity & Disinfection
- Lead and support system disinfection initiatives
- Develop, standardize, and maintain disinfection protocols and quality control processes
- Conduct biosecurity reviews and site audits to ensure compliance with internal standards
Site Cleanliness & Controls
- Evaluate and support site cleanliness practices
- Identify risks and implement improvements to reduce contamination and disease transfer
Fish Transport Disinfection
- Oversee and verify fish transport disinfection practices for:
- Shoreland transport operations
- Subcontractor-managed transport activities
Travel & Site Engagement
- Perform frequent site visits across Maine and Canada
- Work directly with site teams to assess conditions, provide guidance, and support continuous improvement
Qualifications & Experience:
- Education in Water Quality, Environmental Science, Biology, Aquaculture, or a related field
- Experience with water treatment systems, RAS operations, or industrial/biological systems preferred
- Strong understanding of biosecurity principles and system hygiene
- Comfortable working in field-based environments with extensive travel requirements
- Strong observational, analytical, and documentation skills
