About This Position

The Construction and Maintenance Journeyman has a solid background in the building operations field and will perform on-site activities under the supervision of the Construction and Maintenance Foreman to deliver successful projects to the organization, on time and on budget with the desired level of quality.

Supervision: Construction and Maintenance Apprentices

Responsibilities and Duties: (include, but are not limited to):

  • Perform a variety of new construction, maintenance and repairs of buildings and grounds at various facilities and sites, including, but not limited to:
    1. Carpentry: Perform rough to finished carpentry work in the construction and repair of structures such as roofing, framing, walls, doors, windows, partitions, office furniture, shelving, etc.
    2. Electrical: Perform electrical installation and repair for wiring switches, outlets, cables, power circuits, and appliances. Repair and installation of lighting systems and inspection of electrical systems for safety.
    3. Masonry: Lay forms, mix, pour and finish concrete for buildings, sidewalks and slabs.
    4. Painting: Preparation of surfaces for coatings such as paint, enamel, lacquer, varnish, stain and papering. Application of various coatings and papering.
    5. Plumbing: Identification and performance of repair of leaks and breaks; opening clogged pipes and drains; replacement of hardware; maintenance of major systems (e.g., septic).
  • Mentorship of Construction and Maintenance Apprentices and monitoring completion of repairs and projects.
  • Treat fixtures and structural entities requiring repair, including but not limited to: Flooring, Showers, Sinks, Septic, Walls, Roofing
  • Prepare major and minor troubleshooting and repair of furnishings, associated hardware and fixtures, including, but not limited to: Doors, Cabinets, Desks, Closets
  • Service appliances, hook-ups and emergency equipment as required
  • Maintain a clean, safe and orderly work site.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Education and Experience:
    1. Graduation from High School or equivalent (e.g., G.E.D., C.H.S.P.E., etc.), plus
    2. Four (2) years of specialized training through formal apprenticeships, professionally sponsored workshops, vocational training, college or in-service; AND
    3. Four (2) years of experience performing above or related duties; OR
    4. An equivalent combination of education and experience

Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to work independently
  • Proficient email/text communications; interpersonal communication skills
  • Ability to work under varying weather conditions; communicate effectively, verbally and in writing; develop effective working relationships with organizational staff, subordinates, clients and the public.

Special Qualifications:

  • Must possess a valid California driver’s license
  • May be required to attain certification in various trades, such as electrical, HVAC, plumbing, etc.
  • Pre-Employment Investigative Background Check and Drug Test is required.
  • Progress House, Inc. is a Drug-Free Workplace.
  • Post-Hire TB Test is required
  • Pre-employment physical including fitness for duty examination is required.

Work Environment:

Incumbent of the position performs both indoor and outdoor physically demanding duties. Tasks require a variety of physical activities, generally involving muscular strain, such as lifting, walking, standing, stooping, reaching, hearing and seeing. Common eye, hand, finger, leg, and foot dexterity is required. Mental application utilizes memory for details, verbal instructions, emotional stability, and discriminating thinking, and guided problem-solving. May be required to lift in excess of 75 pounds in the normal course of job performance.


This position follows a 4/10 schedule, with employees working four 10-hour days each week, Monday through Thursday. Each shift includes a one-hour unpaid lunch break, along with three paid 10-minute rest breaks scheduled throughout the day.
