Job Description

Position: Camp Facility Custodian
Location: BCNY Harriman Basecamp, Harriman State Park, Southfields, NY
Employment Dates: May 4th – August 28th, 2026
Compensation: $20.00 per hour
Shift: Morning Shift (8:00 AM to 4:00 PM) from May 4th to July 3rd. Afternoon Shift (1:00 PM to 9:00 PM) from July 5th to August 14th. (And back to the Morning Shift from August 14th to August 28th).
Hours per week: At least 40hrs per week. Overtime might be expected

Reports To: Facility Manager

Job Summary

The Camp Facility Custodian is responsible for maintaining the cleanliness, safety, and overall upkeep of camp facilities during afternoon and evening hours. This role focuses on custodial duties such as ensuring all buildings and common areas remain clean, sanitary, and operational for campers and staff. This includes assisting Facility Manager with all required work-related assignments. The ideal candidate is reliable, detail-oriented, and takes pride in maintaining a safe and welcoming environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine cleaning of camp buildings including cabins, restrooms, dining areas, and recreational spaces.

  • Sweep, mop, vacuum, and sanitize floors and surfaces regularly.

  • Clean and restock restrooms, ensuring proper sanitation standards are maintained.

  • Empty trash and recycling bins and transport waste to designated disposal areas.

  • Conduct light maintenance tasks such as replacing light bulbs, tightening fixtures, and minor repairs.

  • Monitor facilities for cleanliness and safety concerns and report maintenance issues promptly.

  • Assist with setup and breakdown of camp spaces, including moving furniture and equipment.

  • Coordinate and manage all laundry needs.

  • Maintain cleaning supplies and notify supervisor when restocking is needed.

  • Ensure all work is completed in compliance with health, safety, and organizational standards.

  • Support evening operations by addressing urgent custodial needs and maintaining common areas during peak usage times.

  • Work collaboratively with staff to ensure a clean, safe, and organized camp environment.

  • Other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.

  • 1–3 years of custodial, janitorial, or facilities support experience preferred.

  • Basic knowledge of cleaning procedures, products, and equipment.

  • Ability to perform light maintenance tasks.

  • Strong attention to detail and time management skills.

  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Requirements

  • You must be able to work in an outside environment, where you have the ability to walk/hike daily, at various grades, elevations, and on uneven terrain regardless of weather conditions. Must be at least 18 years old and authorized to work in the U.S.

  • Must be able to lift 40-50 pounds, and carry and load luggage, tables, chairs, and other program equipment

  • Must be able to pass a background check.

  • Reliable transportation or ability to commute to camp location.

  • Must meet all required immunizations (MMR and Polio required).
