Position Summary:

Reporting to the Director of Conservation, the Senior Program Manager, Forests will lead the Bird Friendly Maple (BFM) Program, part of Audubon’s Working Land Initiative. Audubon’s Working Land Initiative expands and strengthens conserved areas, promotes sustainable forest management to create healthy and resilient forests, and influences policy to advance conservation goals. Audubon‘s BFM Program is a market-based strategy to incentivize maple producers to manage their sugarbushes in ways that support priority birds and resilient forests through unique product labeling and marketing opportunities.


The Senior Program Manager will manage and coordinate all aspects of the BFM Program across the northeast and mid-west including but not limited to working with state and regional staff to implement the BFM program in their respective state and regions, facilitating external partnerships with maple entities, exploring third party certification, and supporting field staff on sugarbush assessments and management plans. In addition, the Senior Program Manager will work with and advise the Vice Presidents and policy staff across the organization in pursuit of policies and programs that promote and support forest conservation and stewardship goals, including the development of market and other high-leverage strategies.


This is a remote position, to be located in Vermont.

Compensation:


$72,000 - $84,000 / year


Essential Functions:
  • Manage all aspects of Audubon’s Bird Friendly Maple Program, including goal setting and tracking outcomes, implementation across the Audubon network, fundraising, communication, and grant management.
  • Serve as an expert on forest management and forest bird habitat requirements to advise Audubon staff including the Vice Presidents, policy staff, and educators.
  • Maintain regular communication, organize meetings, and facilitate coordination of BFM across the Audubon network and with partners to ensure the program is implemented optimally and in accordance with grant deliverables.
  • Establish and maintain partnerships to increase Audubon’s reach and impact via BFM, explore additional partnerships and high-leverage efforts to advance Audubon’s Forest conservation goals.
  • Create, design, and deliver presentations for forest professionals, private landowners, public land managers, foresters, and others.
  • Train and assist field staff as needed in conducting site visits, assessing properties and management plans, providing management options to improve bird habitat; write habitat management plans.
  • Collaborate with Audubon staff members to develop and implement science, education, policy, and on-the-ground conservation programs to achieve intermediate and long-term goals of the forest conservation program.
  • Supervise staff in Vermont and advise staff across the organization to advance BFM program goals.
  • Write grant proposals, meet with donors, and collaborate with the development team to secure funding to support the BFM program.
  • Manage the program budget and related grants, which includes developing contracts and reporting on grant progress to funders and donors.
  • Other project-related activities deemed necessary.

  • Qualifications and Experience:
  • Bachelor’s degree in forestry, natural resources, conservation biology, wildlife management, or related field required. Master’s degree strongly preferred. At least seven years of relevant professional experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience will also be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of forest birds and their habitat needs, and the ability to identify all forest birds by sight and sound.
  • Strong knowledge of forestry and forest management techniques that are employed in northern and eastern forests.
  • Excellent writing and oral communication skills.
  • Must be results-oriented; success will be evaluated, ultimately, by acres of habitat managed appropriately.
  • Proven project management skills and attention to detail to ensure projects and activities meet deadlines and objectives.
  • Self-motivated, independent, progress-driven individual, capable of successfully interacting with colleagues and external partners and entities.
  • Strong customer service skills and proven success establishing and maintaining productive partnerships with agencies and other conservation groups to achieve shared goals.
  • Ability to traverse varying terrain in inclement weather, with or without accommodation. Must have a valid driver’s license and vehicle to travel as job demands.
  • Must be comfortable and willing to work weekends and evenings with day/evening travel as necessary.
