Job Description

Position Summary

Watauga Medical Center is seeking a skilled and compassionate individual to join our Obstetrics (OB) team as an OB Technician. In this crucial role, you will provide essential support to healthcare providers in the labor and delivery unit, assisting with patient care, procedures, and emergencies related to obstetric and gynecological care. The ideal candidate will possess strong clinical skills, exceptional attention to detail, and a commitment to upholding the highest standards of patient safety and satisfaction. Key Responsibilities:

Assist obstetricians, gynecologists, and labor and delivery nurses in providing care to pregnant women during labor, childbirth, and postpartum recovery. Prepare delivery rooms, surgical suites, and other patient care areas for obstetric procedures, ensuring cleanliness, availability of supplies, and proper functioning of equipment. Assist with patient positioning, draping, and sterile preparation for obstetric and gynecological surgeries and procedures, including cesarean sections (C-sections). Scrub into surgical procedures, including C-sections, to provide sterile instruments and supplies to the surgical team and assist with surgical tasks as directed. Anticipate the needs of healthcare providers during obstetric emergencies, such as fetal distress or postpartum hemorrhage, and provide timely assistance and support as required. Perform newborn assessments and provide basic newborn care, including suctioning, drying, and initiating skin-to-skin contact with mothers immediately after delivery. Assist with the collection and documentation of specimens, including umbilical cord blood, placental tissue, and other samples for laboratory analysis as directed. Provide emotional support and reassurance to laboring mothers and their families, explaining procedures, answering questions, and addressing concerns throughout the childbirth process. Participate in patient handoff procedures and communicate relevant information to incoming staff during shift changes or patient transfers. Adhere to infection control protocols, safety regulations, and departmental policies and procedures to maintain a safe and hygienic environment for patients, staff, and visitor

Compensation is competitive and commensurate with education and experience. Hiring compensation ranges from $16.50 - $23.92 / hour. Eligible for shift differential on top of base rate of pay. This position is benefits eligible after a 60-day waiting period.

Position Qualifications

Minimum Education
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Completion of a course leading to listing with the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services Health Care Personnel Registry (NC HCPR) as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) I.
Experience
    • Previous experience as a CNA is preferred.
Required Registration/License/Certification
    • Current certification as a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) I in the state of North Carolina.
    • Basic Life Support (BLS) from the American Heart Association is required at the time of hire.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
    • Knowledge of and works within the scope of the CNA.
    • Ability to communicate courteously and effectively with the public, patients, family, staff, and physicians and acts within the chain of command, utilizing positive verbal and non-verbal skills.
    • Competent in delivering safe and effective patient care within limits of certification and hospital policies and procedures.
    • Knowledge of the continuum of care provided.
    • Ability to demonstrate exceptional customer service to patients, family, staff, and physicians.
    • Computer skills including data entry and the EMR.
Physical Demands
    • Lifts, positions, pushes, pulls, and/or transfers up to and greater than 50 pounds.
    • Manual dexterity and mobility.
    • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable sitting/standing/walking.
    • Bending, squatting, twisting, and turning.
    • Near acuity: ability to see clearly at 20 inches or less.
Working Conditions
  • Regularly exposed to the risk of blood-borne diseases.
  • Frequently exposed to hazards from electrical/mechanical/power equipment, odorous chemicals, and specimens and unpleasant elements (accident, injury, slippery surfaces, uneven surfaces), etc.
  • Subject to irregular hours (days, evenings, nights, weekends, holidays) and emergencies.
  • Continuous standing and walking long periods = to or greater than > 8 hours per shift.
  • Speaking, reading, and writing, expanded > 8 hours per day.
