Job Summary:

Under the direction and supervision of the physical therapist, the PTA treats patients through exercise, massage, gait and balance training, and other therapeutic interventions. They record patients’ progress and report the results of each treatment to the physical therapist.

  • Observe patients before, during, and after therapy, noting the patient’s status and reporting it to a physical therapist.
  • Help patients do specific exercises as part of the plan of care
  • Treat patients using a variety of techniques, such as massage and stretching
  • Use devices and equipment, such as walkers, to help patients
  • Educate patients and family members about what to do after treatment
  • Other duties as assigned.

Education: Graduate of an American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) approved physical therapy program—current license from the State Board of Physical Therapy Examiners.

Job Knowledge: Knowledge and skill in meeting the special needs of the elderly and disabled persons, maintaining sterile techniques, and medical terminology. Must be capable of maintaining regular attendance. Must meet all local health regulations, including a criminal background investigation and reference inquiry. Must maintain current CNA license by obtaining required number of CEU’s each year.

Standards: Must have a genuine interest in the elderly. Patience and tact. Interested in learning and advancement; ability to work congenially with others. Respect for the principles of resident rights, confidentiality, EEO and ADA. Must be able to move between multiple tasks concurrently and make decisions efficiently.

Performance Requirements: Regular and reliable attendance; irregular hours when necessary; attending work-related meetings; attendance at all mandatory trainings-quarterly, at 6-months, and annually. Handling confidential information; keyboarding/typing; computer knowledge; maintaining consistent effort through the workday; meeting deadlines; operating equipment; staying organized; using math/performing calculations.

Mental Requirements: Thinking analytically; handling stressful situations; concentrating on tasks; effective written and verbal communication; examining/observing and remembering details; making decisions; adjusting to change. Ability to work as a collaborative team member.
