Job Description

Evening shift - variable - 3 x10hrs per week. Occasional weekends and holidays. Evening shift is 1430-0100.

JOB SUMMARY

The Medical Technologist performs all technical, pre-analytical, analytical, post-analytical, clerical, quality assurance tasks, and duties assigned associated with laboratory testing in accordance with established standards and procedures.

PRINCIPLE FUNCTIONS includes the following, other duties may be assigned:

  • Specimen Processing:

Processes and handles blood and/or other biological specimens according to established procedures. Instructs patients and other healthcare professionals in the proper collection of samples.

  • Equipment:

Ensures proper operation of laboratory equipment and takes appropriate troubleshooting action in the event of abnormalities. Performs calibration and all quality assurance checks to ensure adherence to established standards of accuracy. Documents as directed.

  • Testing:

Performs variety of clinical laboratory testing in areas of hematology, microbiology, clinical chemistry, urinalysis, coagulation, and transfusion services as indicated Evaluates and documents results in LIS or other documentation as required and established by procedure. Evaluates pending test lists and takes appropriate actions as required to address pending tests.

  • Quality Control:

Performs quality control analyses according to department procedure appropriately assess validity and accuracy of quality control and documents accordingly.

  • Safety:

Follows all facility and laboratory safety policies including but not limited to shipping and handling of biohazard samples, chemical safety, environmental safety and/or infection control methods.

  • Supplies:

Assist with inventory control, order requisitions, and department supply organization as needed.

  • Training:

Assist with training new employees or students as assigned by supervisor and manager.

  • Proficiency Testing:

Complete proficiency testing procedure as directed for regulatory and accreditation comparisons.

  • Additional Duties

Participates in laboratory teams, innovative projects, regulatory survey preparation, and special assignments as directed.

Presents a professional image in all patient and coworker interactions.

Medical Technologist (Medical Laboratory Scientist):

Education

  • Bachelor’s degree in medical technology, medical laboratory science or bachelor’s degree with equivalent science credit hours per CLIA Standard 493.1489.

Training and Experience

  • Must be able to perform complex analysis and have a basic working knowledge of techniques, principles, instruments, and their interrelationships.
  • Using professional judgment must be able to recognize problems, identify the cause, create alternatives, and determine solutions. Must be responsible for own work and decisions with minimum supervision.
  • Strong attention to detail, ability to work in a team or independently, effective communication skills, and adaptability and flexibility within a fast-paced high-quality environment.

Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

  • ASCP or equivalent nationally accredited certification required.

Medical Lab Technician:

Education

  • Associates degree or equivalent military clinical laboratory training required.

Training and Experience
