Job Description
Start Your Career in Medical Device Sales
If you know you want a career in medical device sales and are looking for an opportunity to build the experience, knowledge, and skills to get started in the industry, the Arthrex Detroit Summer Internship Program is designed for you.
Arthrex Detroit is looking for graduating college seniors and recent graduates who are serious about pursuing medical device sales and ready to immerse themselves in the orthopedic industry.
As the exclusive Arthrex agency serving Southeast Michigan, our team works alongside surgeons and healthcare professionals to support innovative orthopedic solutions and help surgeons treat their patients better. This paid summer internship gives future medical device sales professionals firsthand exposure to the clinical, sales, and operational knowledge needed to begin building a successful career in the industry.
Program Timing: The internship typically begins in May, with start dates coordinated around college graduation schedules, and runs through August 2027.
Location: This is a fully in-person internship based in Southeast Michigan. Interns will work from our Troy office and throughout our local sales territories and healthcare facilities.
Housing & Relocation: Arthrex Detroit does not provide housing, relocation assistance, or reimbursement for housing or relocation expenses. Candidates are responsible for securing their own housing and reliable transportation in Southeast Michigan for the duration of the program.
What You’ll Experience
Medical device sales requires much more than strong sales skills. Successful representatives need to understand the products they represent, the procedures they support, the anatomy involved, and how to operate professionally in a surgical environment.
Throughout the summer, you’ll work alongside experienced members of our team while building that foundation through exposure to:
• Medical Device Sales & Field Experience: Learn how representatives support surgeons and healthcare teams, prepare for cases, manage their territories, build customer relationships, and contribute to the overall sales process.
• Products, Procedures & Clinical Knowledge: Build your understanding of anatomy, orthopedic procedures, surgical techniques, and Arthrex technologies across areas such as Sports Medicine, Extremities & Trauma, and Orthobiologics.
• Operating Room Experience: Observe surgical procedures, learn proper OR etiquette, and see firsthand how medical device representatives support cases in a clinical environment.
• Surgical Skills Labs & Medical Education: Participate in educational events and hands-on lab experiences designed to strengthen your understanding of Arthrex products, procedures, and surgical techniques.
• Business & Sales Planning: Learn how sales teams approach territories, goals, customer relationships, performance metrics, and business development.
• Operations & Inventory: Understand the operational side of medical device sales, including surgical trays, product logistics, inventory management, and billing processes.
What You’ll Gain
This program is designed to help you build the foundation needed to launch a career in medical device sales.
By the end of the summer, you’ll have the opportunity to:
• Build meaningful, real-world medical device experience
• Develop foundational knowledge of anatomy, orthopedic procedures, surgical techniques, and Arthrex products
• Learn directly from experienced medical device sales professionals
• Gain firsthand experience in operating rooms, surgical skills labs, and field sales environments
• Strengthen the communication, organization, problem-solving, and professional skills required in the industry
• Build relationships with professionals throughout the orthopedic medical device field
• Position yourself for potential future full-time opportunities with Arthrex Detroit
Who We’re Looking For
We are looking for candidates who aren't simply exploring possible career paths — you already know medical device sales is where you want to be.
Ideal candidates are:
• Graduating college seniors or recent college graduates
• Committed to pursuing a full-time career in medical device sales
• Passionate about healthcare, anatomy, orthopedics, sales, and the medical device industry
• Eager to develop the clinical and technical knowledge required to succeed in the field
• Competitive, motivated, and driven by goals and results
• Strong communicators who enjoy building relationships
• Organized, dependable, coachable, and detail-oriented
• Energized by fast-paced, hands-on environments
• Comfortable working in hospitals, operating rooms, and around anatomic specimens
• Prepared for the schedule demands of the industry, which may include early mornings, evenings, or weekends
• Able to provide their own reliable transportation throughout Southeast Michigan
• Able to secure their own housing in Southeast Michigan for the duration of the internship
What a Day Might Look Like
No two days in medical device sales are exactly the same — and your internship won't be either.
You may start your morning in the OR observing a surgeon perform a procedure using Arthrex products, spend the afternoon in the field learning alongside a sales representative, and finish the day helping prepare for a surgical education event in our lab.
You'll experience the pace, expectations, clinical environment, and level of preparation that come with working in medical device sales while building the knowledge you'll need to begin your career.
