Under the direction of the RN Team Lead or Clinical Nurse Administrator (CNA) the Patient Safety Technician-Float works as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team providing efficient and appropriate assistance with select patient and unit needs. The PST - FLOAT will also perform a variety of clerical duties and various tasks to provide a well-supplied, safe and clean patient unit.

Job Specific Performance Standards

1. Under the direction of the RN Team Lead or Clinical Nurse Administrator (CNA) the Patient Safety Technician-Float works as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team providing efficient and appropriate assistance with select patient and unit needs. The PST - FLOAT will also perform a variety of clerical duties and various tasks to provide a well-supplied, safe and clean patient unit.

2. Under the direction of the RN Team Lead or Clinical Nurse Administrator (CNA) the Patient Safety Technician-Float works as part of a collaborative, multidisciplinary team providing efficient and appropriate assistance with select patient and unit needs. The PST - FLOAT will also perform a variety of clerical duties and various tasks to provide a well-supplied, safe and clean patient unit.

3. Immediately reports any observed changes in the patient’s behavior or condition to the primary nurse. Informs the RN/LPN of any patient complaints related to their health.

4. Calls the appropriate emergency code if needed.

5. Performs patient assistance activities as related to ambulation and mobilization safely, including, but not limited to, assisting patients out of and returning to their bed/chair primarily for bathroom needs (if monitoring only one patient).

6. Regularly conducts room safety sweeps and ensures that potentially hazardous items are removed whenever possible.

7. Monitors applied restraints to ensure patient safety and comfort.

8. Assists staff in the dressing and undressing the patient as needed and securing clothes and belongings as per company standard to ensure the patient’s safety.

9. Assists with delivery of meal trays and setup.

10. Maintains a professional and safe appearance, to include not wearing any items around the neck that could be used as a weapon.

11. Documents all observations including restraints in the medical record as instructed and within designated timeframes.

12. Always ensures patient confidentiality, and refrains from discussing patient information with anyone other than the assigned nurse and physician.

13. Communicates in a professional and empathetic manner with the patient at all times, by listening and acknowledging patient’s complaints and refers such complaints to the nurse.

14. Will not bring personal items such as phones, food, books, or magazines into the room.

15. Maintains infection prevention standards during all activities.

16. Maintains personal and professional boundaries at all times, including refraining from sharing personal information.

17. Answers call lights and secures appropriate resources to address patient need.

18. Performs hourly rounding for patient experience and safety checks per unit standard.

19. Stocks equipment and supplies, monitoring for expired items.

20. Transports patients within the hospital as needed.

21. Answers telephones and completes other clerical duties as assigned.

22. Assists with maintenance of overall unit organization and cleanliness.

Requirements:

QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

  • High school graduate or equivalent required.

EXPERIENCE/SKILL SETS:

  • Must be at least 18 years old
  • Ability to function in a fast-paced work environment with excellent organizational, customer service and prioritization skills required.
  • Prior healthcare experience preferred.

LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION(S):

  • CPR within 3 months of hire.

OSHA Category I: Tasks that involve exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues require use of techniques of Universal Precautions as evidenced with blood borne pathogens standards.

Compensation Disclosure in Accordance with Vermont Act 155

In compliance with Vermont Act 155, Brattleboro Memorial Hospital provides the compensation range for this position in good faith. The listed range represents the pay scale reasonably expected for a successful candidate based on factors such as relevant experience, education, internal equity, and market competitiveness. Final compensation will be determined during the hiring process.
