Mechanical Design Engineer for Packaging in New York at Jobgether

This role focuses on developing innovative mechanical and packaging solutions that improve automation, manufacturing efficiency, and end-to-end logistics. You will serve as a subject matter expert across product and packaging design, helping shape how parts are designed, presented, handled, and transported. The position combines mechanical engineering expertise with packaging optimization, material handling, and highly automated manufacturing environments. You will influence part design and manufacturing equipment while driving improvements in packing density, pick-ability, scalability, and inbound logistics. Collaboration across product, manufacturing, packaging, vehicle, and factory engineering teams will be central to the role. Success requires strong technical judgment, analytical thinking, organization, and the ability to deliver practical solutions under demanding timelines.

• Create part packaging solutions optimized for automation, packing density, material handling, and new product requirements.
• Drive improvements to part design and manufacturing line equipment to enhance efficiency and logistics performance.
• Collaborate with Product Design and Material Flow Engineering to develop Plan for Every Part (PFEP) packaging inputs.
• Optimize part designs for inbound logistics, automation pick-ability, handling, and manufacturing requirements.
• Establish best practices for automation-focused packaging and maintain a reliable source of truth for lineside packaging and handling requirements.
• Promote modular and off-the-shelf technologies where appropriate to reduce design time and improve scalability.
• Partner with Vehicle Engineering, Manufacturing Engineering, Packaging Engineering, and Factory Design teams to develop end-to-end solutions.
• Evaluate and balance product, manufacturing, packaging, technical, and financial constraints when developing solutions.
• Present technical recommendations and negotiate solutions across multiple engineering and operational stakeholders.
• Drive design decisions that improve supply chain efficiency and support future product and manufacturing needs.

Requirements:

• Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Packaging Engineering, or equivalent practical experience.
• 7+ years of experience in mechanical design, product design, or a combination of mechanical design and highly automated manufacturing.
• Proven experience designing components or systems from concept through production validation.
• Extensive knowledge of packaging design and material handling equipment, particularly within manufacturing environments.
• Strong understanding of prototyping, manufacturing, and assembly processes is preferred.
• Familiarity with automation equipment, fixtures, and the integration of equipment designs into existing or new manufacturing systems.
• Proficiency with CATIA or SolidWorks, including engineering drawing creation and tolerance stack-up analysis.
• Strong understanding of mechanical design principles and their application to automated manufacturing and packaging solutions.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to present and defend technical recommendations.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving abilities with a practical, detail-oriented approach.
• Self-motivated and capable of managing multiple projects simultaneously under pressure and tight deadlines.
• Strong collaboration skills and the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary engineering teams.
