Lead Engineering & Quality, Custom Metal Fabrication
Alloy Engineering, a 100% employee-owned company in Berea, Ohio, is hiring an Engineering & Quality Manager to lead engineering, quality, welding documentation, customer satisfaction, and manufacturing support for custom metal fabrication projects.
The Engineering & Quality Manager provides leadership for engineering and quality activities supporting Alloy Engineering. The position is accountable for ensuring that products are designed, processed, manufactured, inspected, and documented in accordance with leadtime, customer requirements, applicable codes and standards, and company quality systems.
This leader connects engineering, quality, manufacturing, integrated operations, project management, and customer-facing functions. The role establishes clear technical priorities, develops engineering and quality capabilities, improves execution discipline, and provides timely resolution of technical and quality issues affecting safety, quality, delivery, cost, and customer satisfaction.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Engineering Leadership
- Lead and develop the engineering team, establishing clear roles, priorities, performance expectations, and accountability thru action-oriented management.
- Provide leadership oversight for engineering execution through the Engineering Lead, ensuring timely support for quotations, sales orders, project execution, manufacturing, inspection, and customer issues.
- Build and oversee project-management capability within the engineering team, including the ability for designated engineers to coordinate assigned projects, manage technical actions, communicate status, escalate risks, and support customer commitments in coordination with any dedicated project-management resources.
- Ensure engineering representation in applicable SQDCP, production, RFQ, sales-order review, and operational planning meetings.
- Develop, maintain, and routinely use an engineering skills and capability matrix to identify skill gaps and establish targeted training, development, and succession plans for engineers and technical team members.
Product and Manufacturing Engineering
- Ensure customer specifications, drawings, purchase-order requirements, codes, and standards are accurately reviewed and translated into manufacturing requirements.
- Provide leadership for design for manufacturability, manufacturability reviews, process development, and technical risk identification.
- Ensure bills of material, routings, drawings, work instructions, specifications, and other technical documentation are accurate and released on time.
- Resolve questions involving product design, technical requirements, materials, fabrication, welding, and inspection.
- Support estimating and sales with technical input, scope clarification, risk identification, and manufacturability review during the quotation process.
Quality Leadership
- Lead quality operations and quality-system execution for Alloy Engineering.
- Establish clear quality expectations, priorities, metrics, escalation processes, and accountability.
- Ensure inspection activities, quality records, nonconformance documentation, and corrective actions are completed accurately and promptly.
- Lead and manager the Material Review Board process and ensure appropriate participation from engineering, quality, manufacturing, and operations.
- Own internal NCR and customer-impacting quality-escape management, ensuring timely containment, MRB review where applicable, root-cause analysis, corrective action, communication, and prevention of recurrence.
- Partner with operations to reduce internal defects, supplier defects, rework, scrap, customer complaints, and cost of poor quality.
- Ensure quality personnel have the technical training, inspection tools, documentation, and organizational support required to perform effectively.
Codes, Standards, and Quality Systems
- Provide leadership oversight for Alloy’s ASME-related engineering, code, compliance, welding, and quality requirements through the ASME Code and Compliance Engineer.
- Coordinate with Corporate Compliance regarding document control, internal audits, external audits, certification requirements, and corrective actions.
- Support the development of ASME engineering capability and the training of future ASME-qualified engineers.
Welding and Technical Support
- Provide leadership oversight for welding-engineering activities and related technical documentation.
- Support weld-school activities, welding training, and technical knowledge transfer.
Cross-Functional and Customer Support
- Partner closely with the Director of Operations, plant leadership, integrated operations, manufacturing, sales, purchasing, project management, and finance.
- Participate in daily operational reviews to identify customer commitments, technical risks, quality concerns, and jobs requiring escalation.
- Support customer meetings, technical reviews, audits, and issue-resolution discussions.
- Balance customer requirements, technical integrity, manufacturability, capacity, delivery commitments, and cost.
People Leadership
- Recruit, onboard, coach, and develop engineering and quality employees.
- Build technical depth and reduce dependence on individual employees through documentation, training, cross-training, and succession planning.

Requirements:· Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering, manufacturing engineering, welding engineering, or a related technical experience required.
· Five or more years of progressive engineering leadership experience in a heavy-fabrication manufacturing environment.
· Prior responsibility for leading engineers, quality personnel, or technical teams.
· Experience in low volume custom-engineered equipment, fabrication, welding, or make-to-order industrial manufacturing strongly preferred.
· Working knowledge of ISO 9001 quality-management systems.
· Experience with nonconformance management, MRB, root-cause analysis, corrective actions, and customer quality issues.
· Ability to interpret customer specifications, engineering drawings, technical standards, and contractual quality requirements.
· Familiarity with ASME requirements, welding codes, WPS/PQR/WPQ documentation, or pressure-related fabrication strongly preferred.
· Experience with ERP systems, document-control systems, CAD-related processes, and quality-management tools preferred.
