About the role:

The Data Platform group builds and operates the foundational data systems that power Modular’s business, from product telemetry to GTM analytics to cross-functional insights used by Engineering, Product, Finance, and the GTM organization. As Modular enters commercialization, the team’s mission is shifting from purely engineering support to enabling data-driven decision-making across the company.

We are looking for a Platform Engineer, Data to improve the systems that make Modular’s data trustworthy, connected, and actionable. In this role, you’ll balance hands-on development with technical leadership, designing and scaling pipelines, shaping data architecture, and partnering with engineering and business stakeholders. We are looking for someone who is passionate about building reliable systems, solving ambiguous problems, and empowering others to make decisions with data.

LOCATION: Candidates based in the US or Canada are welcome to apply. This role is based out of our headquarters in Los Altos, CA office. We provide relocation services within US and Canada.

What you will do:
  • Scale Modular's data stack for the company's next phase of growth.
  • Design, build, and maintain data ingestion and transformation pipelines across Modular's systems.
  • Partner with product and engineering teams to define instrumentation requirements for new product surfaces and customer environments.
  • Build integrations that connect product → GTM → Finance data, giving the company visibility into revenue, pipeline, and unit economics.
  • Contribute to data governance and best practices, building a consistent, trusted data foundation across the company.


What you bring to the table:

  • 0 - 2+ years of experience as a software engineer working heavily with data systems.
  • Strong foundational programming skills in Python or Java alongside solid proficiency in SQL.
  • Familiarity with software development lifecycles and VCS like Git/Github.
  • Experience with cloud platforms such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Familiarity with distributed processing or messaging systems such as Spark, Kafka, Flink, or similar technologies.
  • Knowledge of containers and orchestration technologies such as Docker or Kubernetes.
  • Alignment with our core company cultural values

Helpful but not required:

  • Experience with ETL/ELT pipelines and either streaming or batch systems, plus orchestration frameworks.
  • Experience with data lake and warehouse architectures (e.g., Parquet, Iceberg).
  • A strong sense of data quality, reliability, and performance.
  • Experience with infrastructure-as-code tooling such as Pulumi.
  • Experience with product telemetry systems, usage-based billing, or instrumentation design.
  • Familiarity with data observability or data quality tools.
  • Experience in a high-growth environment.

The estimated base salary range for this role to be performed in the US, regardless of the state, is $135,000 - $165,000 USD.

The salary for the successful applicant will depend on a variety of permissible, non-discriminatory job-related factors, which include but are not limited to education, training, work experience, business needs, or market demands. This range may be modified in the future. The total compensation for a candidate will also include annual target bonus, equity, and benefits, with equity making up a significant portion of your total compensation.
