Job Title: Dental Assistant - Oral Surgery
Department: Dental
Location: Riedman Health Center
Hours Per Week: 40 hours
Schedule: Flexible start times 7:30a, 7:45a, 8a – 8 hour day shift
Summary:
The OR Surgical Tech assists the surgical team by acting as the primary scrub person who handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment during surgical procedures. Maintains constant vigilance for the maintenance of the sterile field.
Key Responsibilities:
- Must maintain at least 15 hours of Continuing Medical Education (CME) per year.
- Checks supplies, instrumentation, and equipment needed for surgical procedures and ensures proper operation.
- Opens sterile supplies and sets up the table for surgical procedures.
- Provides a sterile field for surgical procedures. Ensures that the members of the surgical team are properly attired and assists the surgeon with draping the patient to isolate the operative site.
- Assists in the maintenance of the sterile field by applying principles of aseptic techniques and informing the surgeon/surgical team of infractions.
- Passes instruments and supplies to the surgeon.
- Counts sponges and sharps with the RN before the surgery and before the incision is closed.
- Cleans and prepares the instruments for sterilization.
- Assists in the maintenance of specialty surgical services.
- Prepares the sterile dressing for the patient’s incision.
- Orients medical/nursing students and technicians to the unit.
- Assists in the development of unit goals and objectives.
- Stocks rooms, may handle meds, sharps, and syringes on the OR field.
Required Qualifications:
- Completed a military surgical technology program

- Grandfathering Clause: Provides evidence he or she was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility for a cumulative period of one year, occurring between 12/31/10 – 12/31/14.

- Graduated from a Commission of Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP)- or Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES)- accredited program with a Surgical Technology major AND holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization within 12 months of graduation.

- Hard to Fill Clause: A health care facility may employ or otherwise contract with a person who does not meet the requirements of the function of a surgical technologist if they are unable to employ or contract a sufficient number of qualified surgical technologists. Certification through a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization is required within 24 months after employment, and a degree from an accredited program is required.

- Graduate from an accredited school of practical nursing.
New Graduates:
- Official transcript from an accredited school or letter emailed directly from the school’s registrar’s office confirming program completion will be accepted upon graduation.
- Primary source education verification required within 90 days of start date.
Required Licensure/Certification Skills:
- Completed a military surgical technology program

- Certified Surgical Technologist certification through a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization and degree from an accredited program in Surgical Technology required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: M - Medium Work - Exerting 20 to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects; Requires frequent walking, standing or squatting.
PAY RANGE: $20.00 - $25.00
The listed base pay range is a good faith representation of current potential base pay for successful applicants. It may be modified in the future. Pay is determined by factors including experience, clinical licensure date, relevant qualifications, specialty, internal equity, location, and contracts.
