Job Description
Role:
To originate, manage, and supervise a portion of the Credit Union's portfolio of commercial loans, with the overall objective of maintaining and increasing its asset quality; to develop new and existing business relationships; to represent the Credit Union in the community at large.
The commercial loan officer position shall be responsible for obtaining, reviewing, and evaluating commercial loan requests and commercial deposit relationships.
Soliciting commercial loans and deposits will entail methods such as phone calls to members, emails to members, calling on prospective business members, and developing a referral relationship network in the credit union's trade area to generate new loan leads.
Reviewing commercial loans will entail in-person and digital communication with business members to understand their credit needs, explain the commercial lending process, and offer personalized options based on the needs of the member.
Evaluating commercial loans will entail gathering and analyzing personal financial and business documents, performing underwriting and due diligence in accordance with credit union policies, and documenting loan files with the intent to make a credit lending decision. The Commercial Loan Officer will need to be comfortable understating simple and complex credit metrics to have detailed conversations with members regarding their financial picture.
The Commercial Loan Officer is expected to provide an elevated level of professional service and follow-up for credit union business members and internal credit union staff. The commercial loan officer is expected to maintain a strict level of confidentiality regarding business transactions, loan files, and proprietary information for both the credit union and its members.
Essential Functions & Responsibilities:
Assumes responsibility for the timely completion of assigned commercial loan functions. (25%)
a. Interviews, takes applications, obtains the necessary financial documents, and processes preliminary documentation on commercial loan requests. Discusses loan products, credit criteria, interest rates, and loan documentation with the member.
b. Analyzes in depth and evaluates loan requests in order to make a recommendation of approval or decline. Prepares written credit memorandums for submission to the Commercial Loan Manager. Identifies problems or potential problems with credit information and coordinates with the necessary party to resolve the problems.
c. Provides ongoing monitoring for completed loans, including renewal memorandums for lines of credit, valuation analysis for loan collateral, and annual reviews for credit worthiness monitoring for member relationships.
Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective and professional business relationships with credit union members, vendors, and trade professionals. (25%)
a. Answers questions and resolves requests.
b. Keeps members informed of credit union loan policies and services. Educates members regarding lending, deposit, and ancillary credit union products to serve the members’ financial needs.
c. Maintains a professional relationship with outside vendors, centers of influence, and trade professionals.
d. Meets with applicants whose loans are denied and explains reasons and potential alternatives.
e. Maintains and projects the credit union’s professional reputation.
Assumes responsibility for establishing and maintaining effective communication, coordination, and working relations with credit union personnel and management. (25%)
a. Coordinates functions with related departments and branches and provides support as needed.
b. Maintains a professional working relationship with credit union employees.
c. Assists Commercial Lending personnel and provides support as needed.
d. Keeps management informed of area activities and of any significant problems.
e. May indirectly or directly supervise loan personnel (processors & analysts) and/or lending assistant(s). Ensures that high quality work and efficiency in operations are maintained. May determine work methods and work-flow by assigning, directing, coordinating, and reviewing tasks.
f. Attends and participates in meetings and committees as required.
g. Completes required reports and records on time.
h. Attends assigned training sessions and stays current on new procedures and policies.
Assumes responsibility for related duties as required or assigned. (25%)
a. Stays Informed regarding changes in lending standards and related legal requirements.
b. Completes special projects as assigned.
c. Ensures that work area is clean, secure, and well maintained.
d. Always represents Lookout Credit Union in a professional manner.

Knowledge and Skills:
Experience
One year to two years of commercial banking experience, preferably in commercial underwriting or a similar commercial field. Experience with the local residential and commercial real estate market (trends, pricing, inventory, values) preferred. Experience with land title procedures and best practices in real estate escrow/title also preferred.
Education
A degree in business, finance, accounting, management or related field preferred or equivalent experience.
Interpersonal Skills
Exceptional communication and mutual respect. Interpersonal excellence is a core professional standard, naturally foster a collaborative team environment and possesses the professional polish to serve as an ambassador for the Credit Union in all public-facing interactions.
Other Skills
Good creative/technical writing abilities. Strong understanding of financial analysis and determination of credit worthiness. Knowledge of credit union lending and collections programs, policies, and procedures. Mathematic ability to compute discount rates, interest rates, payments, accrual, profit/loss, ratio, proportion, percentage, and more. Able to perform algebra. Strong analytical abilities. Able to use a financial calculator and related computer/software for lending programs and applications. Good history of credit union volunteer involvement, and/or community/civic/trade organization involvement and business development. Maintenance of an active license number with the Nationwide Mortgage Licensing System and Registry. (NMLS).

Work Environment
Work is generally performed in a temperature-controlled office environment with typical exposure to ambient sounds such as office equipment, telephones, and conversations between Credit Union and team members. Some travel is required.
