This role sits at the heart of a healthcare risk management environment, where you will oversee complex professional and general liability claims from initial notice through final resolution. You will be responsible for evaluating exposure, guiding investigations, and shaping defense strategy in collaboration with legal teams and external counsel. The position requires strong analytical judgment to assess liability, damages, and reserve adequacy while ensuring compliance with multi-jurisdictional regulations. You will also play a key role in negotiations, settlements, and litigation support, including trial preparation and attendance when necessary. Working closely with internal stakeholders and attorneys, you will help protect organizational interests while supporting fair and timely claim outcomes. This is a high-impact role combining technical claims expertise, legal coordination, and strategic decision-making in a mission-driven environment.
In this role, you will manage the full lifecycle of complex liability claims while ensuring accuracy, compliance, and effective resolution.
- Manage professional and general liability claims from inception through settlement or trial, including investigation, evaluation, and resolution strategy.
- Direct and coordinate investigations to establish liability, assess damages, and determine appropriate reserves.
- Negotiate settlements and/or prepare cases for litigation, including trial support and strategy development.
- Supervise outside counsel, monitor litigation progress, and ensure alignment with organizational defense strategy.
- Review applicable case law and regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions to inform claim handling decisions.
- Communicate with claimants, insured parties, attorneys, and internal stakeholders throughout the claims process.
- Prepare detailed documentation, reports, and regulatory submissions related to claim activity and outcomes.
- Travel as needed for depositions, mediations, healthcare facility visits, and trial proceedings.
The ideal candidate brings deep claims-handling expertise, strong legal awareness, and the ability to manage complex, high-stakes cases independently.
- Bachelor’s degree required (fields such as Nursing, Business Administration, Insurance, Sociology, Psychology, or related disciplines preferred).
- 10+ years of claims handling experience in the insurance or healthcare risk environment.
- 5+ years specifically handling professional and general liability claims.
- Active 6-20 All-Lines Adjuster License required.
- Strong knowledge of liability frameworks, litigation processes, and multi-jurisdictional regulatory requirements.
- Proficiency in RiskMaster, MS Word, and MS Excel.
- Excellent negotiation, analytical, and decision-making skills.
- Strong communication abilities with experience coordinating with attorneys and external partners.
- Ability to manage complex caseloads with independence, precision, and sound judgment.
