Project Controls Associate

This role plays a key part in supporting financial discipline and project oversight within large-scale engineering and infrastructure operations. You will help ensure accurate cost tracking, budgeting, and reporting across active projects while supporting compliance with accounting standards and internal controls. The position sits at the intersection of project management and finance, translating operational data into actionable financial insights for leadership and project teams. You will collaborate closely with project managers, accounting teams, and operational stakeholders to monitor job performance and resolve discrepancies. The environment is fast-paced and highly collaborative, requiring strong analytical thinking and attention to detail. This is a hands-on role where your work directly contributes to financial transparency, project efficiency, and informed decision-making across complex infrastructure initiatives.

Accountabilities:
  • Support the implementation and monitoring of accounting processes, internal controls, and project cost management procedures across active projects.
  • Track, analyze, and reconcile project costs, budgets, and general ledger transactions to ensure financial accuracy and compliance with GAAP standards.
  • Review project estimates, cost reports, and financial data to identify variances, risks, and opportunities for improved cost control.
  • Prepare financial analyses and reporting outputs to support operational decision-making and project performance reviews.
  • Coordinate and participate in monthly project and financial status meetings with internal teams and clients, presenting findings and insights.
  • Collaborate with project managers and accounting stakeholders to ensure contract compliance and resolve financial discrepancies.
  • Assist with audit preparation, special projects, and continuous improvement initiatives related to project accounting and financial processes.
Requirements:
  • 2–3 years of experience in project controls, accounting, finance, or project management within a structured business environment.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles, financial controls, and generally accepted accounting practices (GAAP).
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel, with the ability to analyze and interpret complex financial data.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills, with the ability to explain financial concepts to non-financial stakeholders.
  • Excellent attention to detail, analytical thinking, and problem-solving abilities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Ability to work collaboratively across teams, including operations, project management, and finance departments.
  • Self-motivated, proactive, and capable of managing multiple priorities and deadlines effectively.
  • Must be based in the greater Baltimore, MD area and able to travel periodically for onsite meetings.
