Description:

Full-Time or Part-Time available: 32-40 hours per week

Job Summary: The Humane Education Coordinator will lead education outreach and programs on behalf of the Lynchburg Humane Society. The coordinator is responsible for designing and implementing educational opportunities that promote animal welfare, compassion, and empathy, supporting the mission of the Lynchburg Humane Society. The ability to work patiently with children and the public is essential, and attention to detail is crucial, as mistakes can lead to accidents or injuries to guests.

Responsibilities:

Program Operation:

  • Maintain absolute confidentiality regarding personal information and youth records, following privacy guidelines as mandated by state and federal law.
  • Oversee all scheduling, organizing, room set up/clean up, lesson planning, and implementation of education programs, including day camps, youth engagement programs, offsite presentations, birthday parties, field trips, and educational shelter tours.
  • Supervise the safety of participants in the education program and animals.
  • Recruit, train, and supervise education, classroom, animal, and animal visitor volunteers to maintain a pool of loyal, consistent volunteers to draw upon throughout the year.
  • Develop and maintain volunteer job descriptions for education programs and services.
  • Maintain education@lynchburghumane.org emails

Public Relations:

  • Provide high-level customer service to community members interested in education programs.
  • Recognize youth donors and program guest speakers by writing thank-you cards and making social media posts.
  • Build a network of community leaders, business partners, teachers, and parents who promote education opportunities at LHS and support programs as participants or presenters.
  • Attend donor visits and events as requested.

Program Development

  • Commit to self-education and professional development to stay current on best practices and effective education models at fellow animal welfare organizations.
  • Make recommendations to leadership to create new educational opportunities, revise current programs, or discontinue offering certain programs that are not meeting goals.
  • Track education budgets, event payments, and ensure financial goals are met.
  • Work with the Development Director and the Dev and Communications Manager to develop an annual plan with specific objectives, goals, a proposed schedule, budget projections, and an evaluation strategy.

Other:

  • Promote a humane and caring attitude toward all animals.
  • Work courteously, respectfully, and cooperatively with other staff members.
  • Maintain a regular laundry rotation and an organized and sanitary laundry room
  • Walk and handle dogs of various sizes, ages, and behavioral categories.
  • Perform other tasks as directed by management.
  • Personify LHS core values.
Requirements:

  • Must be able to work under stressful conditions and work efficiently and effectively under those conditions
  • Ability to rapidly and accurately process information
  • Ability to recognize a need for assistance and ask for help
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Ability to make decisions
  • Animal Handling
  • Must be able to learn characteristics of animal behavior (for example: be able to identify aggressive or fearful behavior)
  • Must be able to use appropriate safety equipment for fractious or feral animals (will train) – the use of safety equipment is mandatory
  • Must possess excellent reflexes
  • Should be able to identify own limitations and be willing to ask for help
  • Become “Fear Free Certified"

Qualifications:

  • Must be available to work Saturdays
  • Must be available to work full weeks (M-F) during Spring Break Camp and Summer Camps
  • Must pass a background check to work with children.
  • A valid driver’s license is required.
  • Ability to work efficiently with little supervision
  • Efficiency in computer research and the ability to learn the Google Suite.
