  • Position Summary
    • Under general direction, protects, promotes, and optimizes health and abilities. Prevents illness and injury. Alleviates suffering through the diagnosis and treatment. Advocates for patients and their families. Ensures all actions taken in carrying out responsibilities support patient centered care.
  • Position Responsibilities

    • Unit Specific Position Responsibilities
      • The Cardiac Rehabilitation RN serves as role model of cardiovascular health. They communicate regularly to the surrounding community increasing awareness of the prevention and treatment of heart disease.
      • Demonstrates ability to communicate effectively with rehab team members about individual patient findings or concerns about program improvement issues.
      • Contributes expertise as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to offer comprehensive treatment strategies to provide positive outcomes for individual participants and for the cardiac health, rehabilitation and prevention program.
      • Demonstrates the interpersonal and observational skills needed to effectively identify appropriate psychosocial adaption to illness and or the presence of psychopathology; i.e. depression, anger anxiety etc..
      • Assists in orientation and the development of the plan of care with other staff members.
      • Participates in emergency drills and mock codes four times a year as required for program certification. Attends scheduled staff meetings minimum of four times a year.
      • Assesses patients’ risk factors that are modifiable and demonstrates ability to offer support and strategies to aid patient in successful therapeutic lifestyle changes.
      • Immediately reports any new, changing and or significant participant conditions i.e. arrhythmias, abnormal blood pressure response, change in participants’ status to the physician.
      • Develops and adjusts the individual exercise prescription in accordance the daily exercise response in rehab, and physician recommendations on a regular basis.
      • Supervises exercise sessions, monitoring participants for inappropriate responses to exercise.
      • Assess participant’s pre, during and post exercise making appropriate referrals and or recommendations to the participant, other staff and Medical Director as needed.
      • Keeps current in the field of cardiac rehabilitation through journals, in-services and conferences.
      • Effectively applies knowledge of exercise science to a population with cardiovascular disease and other potential co-morbidities.
      • Participates in the collection, analysis and reporting of identified individual patient outcomes and program outcomes.
      • Initiates ACLS measures and or emergency care according to hospital policy.
  • Qualifications, Knowledge & Experience
    • Required Qualifications (Including any licensure, certification, education):
      • Licensed as a Registered Nurse and authorized by the State of Iowa to practice nursing or has active multistate license approved by the Nurse Licensure Compact.

      • Achievement of Baccalaureate degree in nursing within 6 years of hire if hired after January 1, 2014.
      • Basic Life Support (BLS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
        • Advance Life Support (ACLS)
      • Mandatory Reporter training or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
    • Organizational Requirements:
      • Maintain stroke education per regulatory requirements.

    • Preferred Qualifications:

      • Baccalaureate degree in nursing.
      • Professional certification in nursing specialty.

    • Required Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
      • Proficient in communication skills.
      • Ability to pursue and foster a sense of team and partnership across all disciplines.
      • Ability to communicate effectively, in English, with diverse population groups.
      • Ability to be self-directed, flexible, and able to adapt to change.
      • Ability to communicate effectively in a professional and tactful manner with physicians, staff, patients and/or their representatives.
      • Ability to read and understand chart documentation.
      • Ability to demonstrate basic computer skills.
      • Ability to read, write and understand the English language.
      • Minimum of two years experience in recent and relevant medical/cardiac nursing including telemetry monitoring.

    • Preferred Knowledge, Skills & Experience:
      • Advanced Life Support (ALS) training, or within 90 days of hire and must maintain throughout employment.
      • Specialized degree, education and or certification in cardiovascular rehabilitation and secondary prevention.
      • The Cardiac Rehabilitation RN will integrate components of clinician, teacher, consultant and researcher for the inpatient and outpatient with heart disease and their families.
