Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Follow Bender Inc. and applicable customer safety policies.
- Develop and optimize processes, tooling, fixturing, and gauges for manufacturing dry-type LV power transformers up to 25kVA.
- Assist in establishing transformer testing and quality processes.
- Monitor key process metrics: labor hours per unit, first-pass yield, cycle time, rework rate.
- Create and optimize maintenance schedules and setup/changeover procedures for production equipment.
- Perform design calculations to adapt existing designs to different voltages, support manufacturing improvements, and troubleshoot issues.
- Support first-article builds and tests; resolve issues.
- Independently select electrical devices (wires, fuses, relays, breakers, contactors, etc.).
- Perform electrical and mechanical design to customize panels and enclosures with Bender protective equipment to customer requirements.
- Generate wiring diagrams, wire lists, panel/enclosure layouts, and BOMs for electrical control enclosures.
- Design assembly drawings and BOMs for wiring harnesses, custom cable assemblies, and enclosures.
- Prepare Engineering Change Notifications.
- Create BOMs and documentation for transformer and isolated power panel configurations.
- Support Manufacturing in optimizing interdepartmental workflows.
- Review value-added and cost-saving design, component, and material alternatives.
Other Duties
- Support compliance (UL-type) external engineering testing.
- Design and modify mechanical (primarily sheet metal) brackets, enclosures, and assembly drawings.
- Test and evaluate performance of new, modified, and second-source commercial and custom components.
- Provide phone support to resolve supplier and customer issues with electrical/electronic parts and assemblies.
- Identify and qualify alternate suppliers to address lead time, cost, and obsolescence issues.
- Work with internal and external stakeholders to keep Bender's technical literature current.
- Complete reports and metrics as required by management.
- Perform additional duties as assigned.
Educational and Experience Requirements
- Preferred: 2-year technical degree plus 3 years related work experience. Candidates without a degree but with sufficient related work experience may be considered.
- Familiarity with UL, NEC, and associated regulatory requirements.
- Experience designing and/or manufacturing dry-type, low-voltage power transformers (3kVA–25kVA preferred).
- 3D CAD modeling skills; SolidWorks solid modeling and SolidWorks PDM (SolidWorks Electrical desired).
- Knowledge of industry standards for design, inspection, and testing of sheet metal and other mechanical parts and assemblies.
- Ability to read and interpret assembly drawings, electrical schematics, panel schedules, and specifications.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
- Experience with enterprise ERPs (Salesforce and SAP desired).
Other Requirements
- Experience with selection of components to comply with applicable UL, NEC, and other regulatory schema
- Process Engineering
- Experience with electrical test equipment such as DMMs, oscilloscopes, hi-pot
- Experience contributing to kaizen and continuous improvement events
- Experience designing control enclosures to address cable size, density, dress, bend radii, strain relief, etc of multiple electrical conductors of various sizes.
- Experience working in a disciplined engineering design environment. Familiarity with product lifecycle management and associated design reviews/gates.
Physical & Cognitive Demands
- Sitting for extended periods of time, some walking and standing and occasionally assisting setup, manufacture, and testing of transformers on the shop floor
- Frequent operation and use of computer
- Occasional lifting and moving of 10-45 pounds
- Occasional stooping, bending, crouching, reaching or crawling
- Position requires manual dexterity and the ability to use hands/fingers, touch and feel
- Must be able to talk, see, hear and write
- Specific vision abilities include close vision, distance vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus
- Capable of adequate judgement, decision making, reasoning, comprehension, strong English written and verbal communication and stress control.
- Incumbent must have the ability to count accurately, add, subtract, multiply, divide and record, balance and check results for accuracy.
- Must be able to understand and follow basic English instructions and guidelines, complete routine paperwork, as well as prioritize work schedule
