Job Description
About DESRI
DESRI (formerly D. E. Shaw Renewable Investments) is a market-leading owner and operator of renewable energy projects throughout the United States. We have acquired or developed approximately 11.9 gigawatts of contracted capacity across a portfolio of over 80 renewable energy projects in 24 states. DESRI is run by a dynamic team with offices located at New York, Denver, and Hyderabad (India).
About the role
We are looking for a highly analytical and data-driven SCADA & Data Engineer to join our renewable energy operations team. In the modern renewable energy industry, solar and battery (BESS) assets are only as valuable as the data they produce. This role sits at the critical intersection of field control systems (OT) and cloud data infrastructure (IT).
You will be responsible for ensuring reliable SCADA operations while taking full ownership of the telemetry data pipeline — from the inverter, through the edge gateway, to the historian and cloud.
What you'll do
- Data Pipeline & Edge-to-Cloud Integration: Manage the flow of time-series data from site-level devices and RTUs to central historians and cloud databases. Ensure data pipelines are robust, scalable, and well-monitored.
- Data Quality & Anomaly Detection: Act as the ultimate owner of data integrity. Write queries and scripts to automatically detect stale data, flatlines, and anomalous readings. Execute backfill operations to fix historian gaps.
- SCADA Monitoring & Troubleshooting: Monitor SCADA system health and data flow across the portfolio. Investigate protocol-level communication failures (DNP3, Modbus TCP) and device offline events to identify root causes.
- Dashboarding & Analytics Support: Build and maintain interactive dashboards (Grafana, Power BI) to visualize SCADA health, network latency, and data completeness for the performance engineering team.
- Telemetry & Point Mapping: Maintain DNP3, Modbus, and MQTT point lists. Ensure that edge telemetry correctly maps to cloud data models so that downstream analytics teams have clean, standardized data.
- PV/BESS Controls Support: Assist troubleshooting active power control (APC), reactive power control (RPC), and curtailment logic at the plant level.
- Vendor & Integrator Coordination: Work closely with SCADA integrators, network engineers, and software vendors to resolve SCADA issues.
Qualifications
The ideal candidate should hold –
- 2–5+ years of experience bridging SCADA, control systems, and data engineering
- Comfort querying, manipulating, and analyzing large sets of time-series data to identify trends and anomalies
- Strong understanding of industrial and IoT communication protocols — Modbus TCP/RTU, DNP3, and MQTT (publish/subscribe patterns, broker configuration, topic structures)
- Proficiency in SQL for querying relational databases and familiarity with time-series databases
- A deep curiosity for why data is broken — you trace issues back to the network switch, the gateway, or the field device, not just flag bad tags
Preferred Qualifications:
- Exposure to utility-scale solar PV or BESS hardware — inverters, PPCs, SEL RTACs, revenue meters
- Hands-on Python experience (Pandas, API integration) to automate data validation, build ETL workflows, or execute data backfills
- Experience with data pipeline and messaging tools — MQTT brokers (Mosquitto, HiveMQ, EMQX), Node-RED, Apache Kafka, or Telegraf for edge-to-cloud data routing
- Experience with platforms such as Canary, Ignition, Power Factors
- Basic understanding of IP addressing, VLANs, and edge firewalls
Bonus Skills (Nice to Have)
- Experience integrating OT data into cloud environments (AWS IoT, Azure IoT Hub)
- Familiarity with building automated alerts and visualizations
- Scripting experience beyond Python — PowerShell, Bash, or similar for automation and monitoring tasks
