Job Description

Staff Software Engineer Cloud Foundations

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, who manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Staff Software Engineer Cloud Foundations based in the United States.

This is a high-impact staff-level engineering role focused on building and evolving the foundational cloud infrastructure that powers large-scale, mission-critical software systems. You will help design and operate the core compute platforms, orchestration systems, and automation layers that enable hundreds of engineering teams to deliver services reliably and efficiently. The environment is highly distributed and remote-first, requiring strong collaboration and asynchronous communication skills. You will contribute to the transition from traditional data center infrastructure to modern cloud-native and Azure-based architectures. This role involves solving deeply complex scalability, reliability, and infrastructure automation challenges at planetary scale. You will also influence technical direction across multiple domains while mentoring engineers and raising the bar for platform engineering excellence. This is a role for engineers who thrive in ambiguity and enjoy building the systems that other systems depend on.

Accountabilities:
  • Lead architecture and technical direction across cloud foundations systems, including compute lifecycle management, infrastructure orchestration, fleet automation, and configuration management platforms.
  • Design and implement highly scalable and reliable distributed systems supporting fleet-wide operations such as orchestration, service discovery, and multi-region state management.
  • Build and evolve cloud-native “paved paths” that enable product teams to deploy and operate services using modern event-driven and platform-native patterns.
  • Drive the modernization of legacy infrastructure toward Azure-native architectures, ensuring safe migration, reliability, and operational continuity.
  • Develop, maintain, and review production-grade software primarily in Go, contributing to shared engineering standards and tooling decisions.
  • Lead technical decision-making across infrastructure domains and influence architectural direction across multiple engineering teams.
  • Mentor engineers through design reviews, code reviews, and technical guidance, raising overall engineering quality and consistency.
  • Participate in on-call rotations, lead incident response for critical systems, and drive post-incident improvements to prevent recurrence.
  • Improve system reliability, observability, and operational efficiency by reducing toil and enhancing automation across infrastructure workflows.
  • Collaborate with globally distributed teams through strong written communication and asynchronous engineering practices.
Requirements
  • 9+ years of professional software engineering experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience in computer science or related technical fields.
  • Strong experience building and maintaining large-scale production systems in languages such as Go, Java, C++, Python, Ruby, Rust, or similar.
  • 4+ years of experience designing and operating large-scale platform or infrastructure systems supporting high-traffic applications.
  • 4+ years of experience working with cloud platforms such as Azure, AWS, or GCP, building cloud-native workloads and services.
  • 2+ years of experience with fleet-scale infrastructure systems such as hypervisors, configuration management tools, or orchestration platforms.
  • Deep understanding of distributed systems principles, including scalability, reliability, fault tolerance, and state management.
  • Experience building or operating cloud-native platforms (e.g., Kubernetes-based systems or equivalent managed services).
  • Familiarity with infrastructure automation and configuration tools such as Ansible, Puppet, Chef, or similar technologies.
  • Strong proficiency in system design, architectural decision-making, and debugging complex production issues.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with proven experience working in remote or distributed teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and influence technical direction in cross-functional environments.
  • Bachelor’s, Master’s, or PhD in Computer Science or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).
Benefits
  • Highly competitive compensation package with base salary ranging from $140,400 to $372,300 depending on experience and location.
  • Eligibility for annual bonus and equity-based rewards based on individual and company performance.
  • Flexible remote-first work environment across the United States.
  • Comprehensive health coverage including medical, dental, and vision insurance.
  • Retirement savings plans and financial wellness programs.
  • Generous paid time off, including vacation, holidays, and flexible leave policies.
  • Strong learning and development culture with ongoing technical growth opportunities.
  • Access to cutting-edge cloud infrastructure technologies and large-scale distributed systems challenges.
  • Inclusive, diverse, and globally distributed engineering culture.
  • Wellness, mental health, and employee support programs.
  • Opportunity to shape foundational systems used by hundreds of engineering teams worldwide.
