Description:
The Field Service Technician – Power Systems supports the startup, commissioning, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical power distribution systems at customer sites throughout the greater Houston, Texas area. This role works independently on routine field assignments while supporting senior technicians and engineers on more complex projects, helping ensure safe system energization and reliable service delivery to customers.
The position requires regular local travel to multiple customer locations within the Houston metropolitan area. Overnight travel is limited and typically not required, though occasional extended hours may be necessary during commissioning or energization activities.
Responsibilities:
Perform startup, commissioning, and testing of electrical power systems, including medium voltage switchgear, low voltage switchgear, switchboards, motor control centers (MCCs), and variable frequency drives (VFDs).
Conduct electrical testing such as insulation resistance, contact resistance, and basic relay and functional verification.
Read and interpret one-line diagrams, schematics, and basic control logic to support installation and troubleshooting activities.
Diagnose and resolve system issues, escalating more complex problems to senior team members as needed.
Work collaboratively with customers, contractors, and internal teams to support successful project execution.
Assist during system energization and commissioning activities following established procedures and guidance.
Prepare complete and accurate field service reports for customer documentation.
Maintain adherence to all safety standards, including NFPA 70E and OSHA requirements.
Maintain tools, equipment, and service vehicles in proper working condition.
Travel to customer sites as required to support project execution.
Perform other duties as assigned by management.
Requirements:
4–7 years of experience in field service, commissioning, or electrical testing.
Working knowledge of medium voltage and low voltage power distribution systems.
Ability to troubleshoot and resolve standard electrical issues in the field.
Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and drawings.
Strong communication and teamwork skills in field environments.
Ability to work independently on routine assignments with limited supervision.
Willingness to travel as required.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with InterNational Electrical Testing Association (NETA) standards.
NETA Certification (Level I or II) preferred.
Experience with protective relays and control systems.
OEM training (Siemens, Eaton, Schneider, ABB).
Journeyman Electrician license preferred.
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
This role requires regular standing, walking, climbing stairs and ladders, kneeling, bending, and working in industrial and outdoor environments, including electrical rooms, substations, and construction sites.
The Field Service Technician – Power Systems must be able to safely lift, carry, push, and pull tools and test equipment weighing up to 50 pounds independently on a regular basis.
Occasional handling of heavier equipment may be required and is typically performed using mechanical assistance, carts, hoists, or team-lifting in accordance with company safety procedures and OSHA guidelines.
The role requires the ability to wear appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), including arc-flash protective gear, and to work extended hours during system startup, commissioning, and energization activities.
