Fleet Mechanic

Location: Waseca, MN
Pay: $24.00-$36.00 per hour (Based on Experience)

Job Purpose

Palmer Bus Service is seeking a skilled Fleet Mechanic to join our Waseca team. This position is responsible for diagnosing, repairing, and performing preventative maintenance on our diverse fleet of diesel, propane, and gasoline-powered school buses, vans, and occasional company fuel trucks.

Whether you're an experienced fleet mechanic or have a strong automotive background looking to expand your skills, you'll play an important role in keeping our vehicles safe, reliable, and ready to transport students every day.

Pay Based on Experience

Entry-Level Fleet Mechanic

  • $24.00-$29.00 per hour
  • Automotive or mechanical repair experience
  • Training provided on school buses and commercial vehicles

Experienced Fleet Mechanic

  • $29.00-$36.00 per hour
  • Three or more years of fleet, diesel, propane, gas, medium-duty truck, or heavy equipment experience
  • Strong diagnostic and troubleshooting abilities
Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Diagnose mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and electronic issues on company vehicles.
  • Perform preventative maintenance to ensure vehicles remain safe, reliable, and DOT compliant.
  • Repair and maintain diesel, propane, and gasoline-powered school buses, vans, and occasional company fuel trucks.
  • Diagnose and repair engines, transmissions, steering, suspension, brake systems, and electrical components.
  • Perform Minnesota DOT inspections and complete required maintenance and repair documentation.
  • Conduct road tests and visual inspections to verify repairs.
  • Maintain accurate service records and repair orders.
  • Inventory management by maintaining appropriate parts and shop supplies.
  • Help control repair costs by utilizing warranty opportunities and evaluating repair options.
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment.
  • Communicate repair progress and vehicle status with the Site Manager.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
QualificationsRequired
  • Strong mechanical aptitude gained through education or work experience.
  • Ability to diagnose and repair mechanical and electrical systems.
  • Knowledge of safe shop practices and procedures.
  • Ability to work independently while managing multiple priorities.
  • Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Ability to maintain accurate service records.
  • Ability to establish positive working relationships with coworkers and management.
Preferred
  • Experience working on diesel, propane, gasoline, or commercial vehicles.
  • Experience with preventative maintenance and DOT inspections.
  • ASE Certifications are a plus but not required.
  • Previous experience with school buses, medium-duty trucks, fleet vehicles, agricultural equipment, construction equipment, or automotive repair.
License Requirements
  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Must possess, or be able to obtain, a Minnesota Class B Commercial Driver's License with Passenger, School Bus, and Air Brake endorsements. Training provided if needed.

Physical Requirements

The usual and customary methods of performing the job's functions require the following physical demands:

  • Usually work indoors. May occasionally repair buses on the road.
  • Sometimes work with hazardous equipment, tools, situations, and conditions.
  • Wear company issued uniform.
  • Work inside various types of buses. Often test drive them before, during, and after repairs.
  • Wear protective / safety gear as required.
  • Lift and carry up to 50 lbs.
