About This Position

Nurse Practitioner

POSITION OVERVIEW:

Under the general guidance of the Administration and Medical Directors, and in accordance with the Iowa State Board of Nursing the nurse practitioner will evaluate, diagnose, and treat patients with diseases and health conditions following the appropriate medical practice guidelines. Provides medical care to patients of varying types and acuity and is responsible for the continuous and comprehensive management of a broad range of health services. Utilizes the knowledge and skill acquired through specialized training, to promote health, prevent disease, and assess patient health care management. Patient care is to be delivered in collaboration with and/or under the direct supervision of the physician. Performs assigned procedures and duties within the scope of practice as set forth by the Iowa State Board of Nursing. Regular attendance is an essential function of this position.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program.
  • Licensed to practice in the state of Iowa.
  • Must be registered under both state and federal Controlled Substances Acts.
  • Previous experience as a Nurse Practitioner within a family practice clinic is preferred for caring for both acute and chronic health conditions.

ACCOUNTABILITY:

Reports to Clinic Nurse Manager, Chief Operating Officer, or Chief Executive Officer

DIRECT REPORTS:

None

POSITION-SPECIFIC REQUIREMENTS:

  • Obtains detailed patient medical history
  • Assesses physical status of patient through physical examination
  • Administers therapeutic procedures such as injections, immunizations, suturing, wound care, etc.
  • Orders diagnostic testing such as radiology images, electrocardiograms, laboratory tests, other diagnostic tests, and interprets results
  • Instructs patients on prescribed therapeutic regimens, home care and health maintenance
  • Prescribes medication for patients
  • Evaluates outcomes of direct patient care and consults with other specialists as required
  • Maintains required electronic medical records and records progress notes as to status, treatments and procedures
  • Provides preventative health care services to patients and arranges consultations and referrals
  • Incorporate quality improvement data and/or patient satisfaction data in clinic goals
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of regulations applicable to patient and/or clinic functions
  • Demonstrate fiscal accountability for clinic and the ability to achieve outcomes within resources
  • Exhibits excellent customer service to patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers in accordance with Jefferson County Health Center’s Organizational Standards of Conduct
  • Has interpersonal skills sufficient to work closely with patients, the public, and others
  • Demonstrates flexibility in the work environment
  • Functions effectively in stressful situations
  • Uses critical thinking and problem-solving skills
  • Works independently
  • Is consistent and accurate in completing tasks

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Works in a well-illuminated, climate-controlled environment
  • May come in contact with hazardous chemical or treatment modalities
  • Possibility exists of exposure to communicable diseases
  • Involvement in inpatient care may result in unavoidable work-related illness or injury
  • Work environment is comfortable, with minimal exposure to physical hazards
  • Moderate to loud noise environment when machines/equipment in use
  • Involvement in checking in/moving of supplies may result in unavoidable work-related injury
  • Must be constantly alert for patient/family emergency situations
