Function of Position:

The Part-Time Student Assistant will support the Optical Systems Technology Program. Activities may be assigned at the Brighton and/or Downtown Campus (or other sites, as appropriate). Student Assistants report to the Program Director of the Optical Systems Technology Program. The successful candidate will bring a passion for expanding awareness of the Optics program and a desire to support and mentor MCC students as they pursue educational and career goals.

Examples of Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Demonstrates and maintains current subject knowledge.
  • Support Outreach Coordinator with on and off campus outreach activities, tours, and events.
  • Support faculty and students in courses within Optical Systems Technology Program.
  • Assist faculty with lab set up, management, and reorganization.
  • Provide 1:1 support to students to enhance student engagement and learning.
  • Demonstrates excellent time management skills, the ability to prioritize workflow, and multi-task.
  • Up to 10-hours per week per course (not to exceed 20-hours).
  • Performs other duties and responsibilities assigned by the Program Director, as appropriate.

Job Requirements:

Required Qualifications:

  • Current MCC student enrolled in Optical Systems Technology program
  • Familiarity with one or more outreach activities: Presentations, Tours, Demonstrations
  • Familiarity with one or more of the following course topics: Conventional Optical Fabrication, CNC Optical Fabrication, Optical Systems, Geometrical Optics, Optical Instruments and Analysis, Wave Optics, Lasers, Photonics
  • Evidence of effective communication (interpersonal, speaking, and writing) skills
  • Commitment to supporting an inclusive environment on campus
  • Evidence of respect for and understanding of people with diverse backgrounds, abilities, and needs

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in implementing outreach and networking activities and initiatives
  • Experience in fostering academic success among underserved, diverse student populations and clients of the College
  • Experience with Interferometers and Metrology equipment
  • Bilingual and able to read, write, and speak Spanish or other languages proficiently

Physical Demands of Position: Work requires the ability to drive frequently to schools and companies locally; work requires exertion of up to 10 pounds of force occasionally and a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to move objects; work requires fingering, grasping, and repetitive keyboarding motions; vocal communications is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels; visual acuity is required for preparing and analyzing written or computer data, determining the accuracy and thoroughness of work, and observing general surroundings and activities; no adverse environmental conditions; frequently traveling between buildings on campus, to other campuses, locally to attend meetings and conferences.



Additional Information:

Pay Rate: $15.50-$18/hour
Hours per week: Up to 10 hours/week (not to exceed 20-hours)
