Position Information


Under the direction of the Facilities Services Custodial Supervisor, the Sr. Custodian performs a variety of custodial/housekeeping tasks to care, maintain, disinfect, sanitize, and preserve campus facilities. The Sr. Custodian is responsible for the upkeep of their assigned building(s) to ensure a safe and clean environment for staff and students to enjoy. The Sr. Custodian may work independently or as a part of a team in assigned work areas in a fast paced environment with project deadlines and close turnarounds while maintaining a positive attitude. The Sr. Custodian uses their own initiative and proactively addresses daily tasks to maintain a clean environment. Sr. Custodians communicate effectively with colleagues, supervisors, staff, faculty and students to ensure a good relationship with campus customers.Please Note: This job posting is for multiple openings on various shifts including day, swing, and graveyard shifts. The full salary range for the Sr. Custodian position is $21.05 - $28.89 per hour. We base salary offers on a variety of considerations, such as education, licensure and certifications, experience, and other business and organizational needs. Applicants must have current work authorization when accepting a UCR staff position. Currently, we are unable to sponsor or take over sponsorship of an employment Visa for staff.As a University employee, you will be required to comply with all applicable University policies and/or collective bargaining agreements, as may be amended from time to time. Federal, state, or local government directives may impose additional requirements.***Please note the realized minimum pay for this position will be $25 an hour.***

Six months of experience in custodial/housekeeping operations or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Required
Experience in safe use of a wide variety of equipment and machinery common to custodial services including, but not limited to; stripping/buffing machines, vacuums, steam pressure washers, wet/dry shop vacuums, carpet extractors (bonnet, dry, hydro extraction) cleaning machines, raiding flooring cleaning machines, squeegees, brushes, etc. Required
Experience in safe use of cleaning chemicals, their interactions, danger signs and disposal methods. Required
Experience in proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining a variety of floor surfaces including, but not limited to resilient tile floors, carpeted floors and terrazzo floors. Required
Prior experience and ability to prioritizing work orders, routine work, emergency requests, combined with the knowledge to choose the proper materials and equipment to accomplish the work in the most expeditious and safe manner. Preferred
Experience working with a diverse student, staff, faculty and visitor population and ability to provide exemplary customer service. Preferred

Willingness and ability to work scheduled, unscheduled, and emergency overtime.
Ability to work effectively; following through on assignments with minimal direction and fluctuating workload.
Ability to read write and communicate effectively in the English language with co-workers, supervisors, and the general public. Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
Knowledge, skill and ability to apply and practice proper procedures for cleaning and maintaining a variety of floor surfaces including, but not limited to resilient tile floors, carpeted floors, and terrazzo floors.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Ability to work a flexible schedule (weekends and holidays; early mornings, mornings, evening or graveyard shifts), as needed to accommodate campus event schedules.
Knowledge, skill, and ability to safely use of cleaning chemicals and understand their interactions, danger signs and disposal methods.
Knowledge, skill and ability to safely use of a wide variety of equipment and machinery common to custodial services including, but not limited to; stripping/buffing machines, vacuums, steam pressure washers, wet/dry shop vacuums, carpet extractors (bonnet, dry, hydro extraction) cleaning machines, raiding flooring cleaning machines, squeegees, brushes, etc.
Ability to perform heavy/physically demanding tasks which require: pushing, pulling, walking, standing, reaching, bending, twisting, stooping, kneeling, squatting, stretching, reaching above shoulder level and lifting up to 75 pounds. Ability to safely remove and replace heavy linen carts, refuse/recycling dumpsters from a loading dock routinely using a manual or mechanical cart/equipment.
Ability to work indoors or outdoors with variable temperatures and conditions including: dust, smog, rain or temperatures ranging from high heat with humidity to cold conditions.
Preferred Qualifications
Knowledge of UCR/UC policies, procedures and systems.
Knowledge and skill to use MS Office programs and email.
Basic knowledge in safe and proper procedures when hazardous materials are suspected; knowledge of safe and proper methods to clean up and dispose of biohazards and chemicals such as: rodent droppings, vomit, blood, raw sewage or chemicals.
Knowledge of applicable federal and state regulations governing areas related to the responsibilities of the job, including SB-198 Illness and Injury Prevention Program (IIPP).
Knowledge and ability to use desktop computers, laptops, tablets, and other electronic devices.
Ability to read and understand the proper use of Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS).
