Ophthalmic Asst. Details
Essential Job Duties:
- Performs patient work-up in preparation for the doctor's evaluation. Technical skills are performed efficiently and accurately, with proper use of the related equipment.
- Arranges referrals.
- Supplies patient and referral doctor with appropriate information, paperwork, and directions.
- Sets up appointments for special testing.
- Checks on insurance pre-certification, referrals, and second opinions.
- Proper documentation is entered in the chart and computer.
- Contact lenses: Places and receives orders/Performs verification of contact lenses/Dispenses and gives patient instruction/Polishes contact lenses/Modifies parameters
- Prepares chart and daily appointment schedules: Has ability to prepare charts for patient visits/Has ability to screen charts and appointment list to plan for upcoming testing and procedures.
- Makes sure documentation is complete, accurate, and legible.
- Is chairside assistant to the doctor:
- Prepares and assists with laser surgery, refractive surgery, and in-office sterile procedures.
- Pressure patching
- Scribing for and assisting doctors in the examination rooms
- Telephone:
- Is knowledgeable of proper use
- Exhibits good customer service skills
- Is helpful in answering questions
- Records complete and accurate phone messages
- Reflects a pleasant phone voice and tone
- Computer
- Has ability to access and enter information needed to complete everyday tasks.
- Understands appointment scheduling and doctors' scheduling preferences.
- Has ability to schedule special testing, laser, and in-office procedures.
- Must be familiar with billing and coding policies and procedures.
- Has ability to use the PDR, CPT, and ICD-9 books.
- Responds appropriately to emergency situations.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
- Sterilization procedures
- Cleaning and packaging instruments and wrapping towel packs
- Terminal cleaning of minor surgery room
- Operating and cleaning the autoclave
- Basic equipment maintenance
- Neat, clean, and organized work areas
- Exam rooms and waiting areas neat, clean, and stocked
- Inventory closets organized
- Discards outdated supplies and medications
Qualifications:
- Has successfully passed the Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) examination. Certification has been maintained.
- At least one year of experience in Ophthalmology or Optometry.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective communication with patients, staff, and the public. Able to work as a team member.
- Ability to interpret and apply policies and procedures to make decisions and solve problems.
- Maintains accurate patient records and patient confidentiality.
- Flexible in work schedule and habits to meet the demands of the department.
- BLS certification is required. It is provided and maintained as part of employment.
- Flexibility to meet demands of the department.
