Job Description

Senior Software Engineer - Interop

This position is posted by Jobgether on behalf of a partner company. We are currently looking for a Senior Software Engineer - Interop in the United States.

This role sits at the core of modern healthcare interoperability, where you will design and build systems that securely retrieve, normalize, and deliver patient data across complex healthcare networks. You will work on backend services that power Release of Information workflows, ensuring that patient records are accurately and efficiently accessed through FHIR-based APIs and related standards. In a fully remote, highly collaborative engineering environment, you will contribute to both modern cloud-native services and legacy system integrations. The role requires strong architectural thinking, especially when navigating ambiguous interoperability challenges across external healthcare systems. You will have real influence on technical direction as the platform evolves toward deeper FHIR adoption and system modernization. This is a hands-on engineering position where reliability, compliance, and scalability directly impact healthcare operations at scale.

Accountabilities:
  • Design, build, and maintain backend services and APIs for retrieving and processing patient data using FHIR (R4) and healthcare interoperability standards.
  • Develop and enhance interoperability workflows supporting Release of Information (ROI), including identity matching, record discovery, and data delivery.
  • Integrate with external EHR systems and healthcare networks using RESTful APIs, FHIR, and event-driven architectures.
  • Modernize and maintain existing .NET-based services while supporting legacy system integrations where required.
  • Own and contribute to technical roadmaps for interoperability components, balancing scalability, compliance, and delivery speed.
  • Ensure systems are reliable, observable, and production-ready through strong engineering and testing practices.
  • Collaborate with product, compliance, and operations teams to translate healthcare requirements into technical solutions.
  • Identify and mitigate risks related to data integrity, external dependencies, and system reliability in distributed environments.
  • Participate in code reviews, uphold engineering standards, and mentor other engineers on backend and healthcare integration topics.
Requirements:
  • 6+ years of professional software engineering experience with increasing technical complexity and ownership.
  • Strong proficiency in C#, .NET Framework / .NET 6+, ASP.NET Web API, MVC, Entity Framework, and SQL Server.
  • Experience building and operating distributed, API-driven systems in production environments.
  • Hands-on experience with healthcare interoperability, particularly FHIR-based integrations.
  • Strong understanding of relational databases, data modeling, and SQL performance optimization.
  • Experience integrating with third-party systems where reliability, error handling, and observability are critical.
  • Strong testing practices including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing.
  • Experience with CI/CD pipelines, DevOps practices, and cloud environments such as AWS or Azure.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or equivalent practical experience.
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively in remote, cross-functional teams.
  • Preferred: experience with SMART on FHIR, OAuth2, major EHR systems (Epic, Meditech, NextGen), healthcare compliance (HIPAA), and AWS services (Lambda, SQS, SNS, RDS).
  • Strong AI-assisted development mindset, including daily use of AI tools for coding, debugging, and development workflows while maintaining strong code review discipline.
Benefits:
  • Competitive compensation aligned with experience and market standards.
  • Fully remote-first work environment.
  • Opportunity to work on meaningful healthcare systems that directly impact patient data access and care workflows.
  • Exposure to modern FHIR-based interoperability platforms at scale.
  • High ownership role with influence over architecture and technical direction.
  • Collaborative, engineering-driven culture with a small and impactful team.
  • Strong emphasis on AI-augmented development practices as part of daily workflow.
  • Opportunity for professional growth in a complex, high-impact technical domain.
