GPS Layout Party Chief at Landmark Construction – Charleston, South Carolina

Position Summary

The GPS Layout Party Chief leads and performs field surveying and construction layout activities using GPS, robotic total stations, and related survey equipment. This role is responsible for accurately staking and verifying construction control points, utilities, and site features to ensure projects are built according to plans and specifications. The Party Chief supervises survey crew members, maintains equipment, and coordinates closely with project managers and field teams.

Key Responsibilities

1. Lead daily field operations and supervise crew members
2. Perform GPS and robotic total station layout for utilities, grading, roadwork, and site construction
3. Establish and verify control points, benchmarks, and construction staking
4. Interpret engineering plans, drawings, and specifications for accurate field layout
5. Collect, record, and manage topographic data using data collectors and construction software
6. Ensure layout accuracy and resolve discrepancies in field conditions
7. Communicate with project managers, superintendents, and foremen to coordinate layout needs
8. Perform as-built and prepare field notes and reports
9. Maintain and calibrate survey equipment and GPS systems
10. Ensure safe work practices and compliance with company and site safety requirements
11. Train and mentor junior survey crew members

Qualifications

1. High school diploma or GED required; or 2 years construction technology training preferred
2. 2-3+ years of construction layout or land surveying experience
3. Strong math, problem-solving, and organizational skills
4. Valid driver’s license with clean driving record

Physical Requirements

1. Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions
2. Frequent walking, standing, lifting (up to 50 lbs), and uneven terrain navigation
