Position Overview
The Staff Accountant supports the financial health and operational excellence of the Denver Metro Chamber of Commerce by ensuring accurate and timely recording, analysis, and reporting for multiple revenue streams within the Chamber. Additionally, this role supports the month-end closing cycle as well as collaborating in FP&A and billing processes. The position also assists with internal/external audit requirements and budget preparation for the Chamber, the Leadership Foundation, and other affiliates. The Staff Accountant works closely with multiple Chamber departments to provide accurate and timely financial data for daily operations and long-term planning.
Key Responsibilities
Revenue Operations
- Lead billing cycle for a variety of departments, with processes to include invoicing, payment plan initiation, and validation of revenue received.
- Maintain accurate and consistent A/R aging and receivables outreach.
- Assist in analyzing membership trends, revenue performance, variances, and opportunities for improvement.
- Accurately prepare and record monthly revenue recognition entries.
- Lead the recognition and tracking of non-cash/in-kind donations and agreements.
- Track and communicate complex system of member benefits fulfillment with multiple departments.
- Identify opportunities to streamline and automate revenue workflows.
- Assist with system implementations or enhancements related to revenue, billing, or ERP tools.
- Partner with the Sales team to resolve billing issues, adjustments, and member status updates.
General Accounting
- Accurate preparation of monthly bank and investment reconciliations.
- Review, prepare and post monthly journal entries.
- Help produce monthly financial statements, revenue reports, and financial data.
- Assist with review and approval of payables and purchasing card charges.
- Partner in budget process, including initiation of annual budget and proforma plus consistent year-round budget reviews with multiple teams.
- Support internal customers through the creation, tracking, and monitoring of budgets for Chamber events and programs.
- Assist in preparing revenue reports, dashboards, and supporting analysis for leadership and program managers.
- Track and monitor restricted, temporarily restricted, and unrestricted funding to ensure proper classification and release of restrictions.
- Support the preparation of financial reports for funders, ensuring accuracy and alignment with grant budgets.
- Oversee the dissemination of charitable tax letters.
- Assist in strengthening internal controls and developing consistent financial policies and procedures to mitigate risk.
- Support audit preparation with schedules and documentation.
- Ensure compliance with GAAP and nonprofit accounting standards.
Qualifications and Competencies
- Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related field (or equivalent experience).
- 2 – 5 years accounting experience - nonprofit preferred.
- Understanding of nonprofit GAAP.
- Strong understanding of revenue recognition, deferred revenue, and fund accounting.
- Familiarity with Salesforce or similar CRM system.
- Proficiency in Excel and financial systems (e.g., NetSuite, Sage, GP or similar).
- High attention to detail and accuracy in all deliverables.
- Strong communication and collaboration skills; ability to explain financial concepts clearly to non-financial audiences.
- Ability to interpret complex data and identify actionable insights.
